Hey! I was wondering what kind of traditions or etiquette go with the engagement party...Is is more of an american thing?? I can't seem to find many chats about people on canadian bride having thrown one.. when are they usually thrown? who do you invite? I would like to have one around this mothers day in honor of our wedding date for 2007..what does everyone think I am kind of lost on this topic and in search of guidance....

Hi!

My FMIL threw my FH and I an engagement party last August.  It was such a fun party.  She provided all the food and drinks.  It was very casual.  At her house, we had BBQ and a beer keg.  We went swimming and hot tubbing.  Our close friends and family were there and it went from 3:00pm to really late at night.  We asked that no one bring gifts.  Our friends still talk about what an amazing time they had.  I don't know if we followed any traditions or proper etiquette but everyone had an amazing time, it was a great way for both sides of the family to get to know each other and celebrate with us.  I'm pretty sure an engagement party can be anytime before the wedding parties begin (like your shower, stag, etc.).  We were engaged in February 2005, so it doesn't need to be right after you got engaged.  I hope that helps you out a bit, let me know if you have any questions.

So when is your wedding date? I am not too picky about when we throw it.. I thought it would be nice because we bought a house around the time we got engaged and we haven't had a house warming that we could have a family party announcing our date kinda thing. We have family weddingssss... throughout the year so the bridal showers and stags etc will start and it will be a bit overwhelming to add our engagement party to the mix..But your party sounds like what I would like to acheive. Low key, Fun and something to remember.

my parents are having an engagement party for us june 3rd!  I am really excited.  This has been tradition for my family.  As far as I know it is usually a more intimate affair.... just family and a few close friends (usually those who are in the wedding party).  We were engaged last May, and the party is this June.  It is being held just a little less then a year to the wedding date.  I am not sure if it is proper to host your own engagement party, because even if you say 'no gifts', people often still feel compelled to bring somthing.  If you want to have a party on mothers day, I'd put the invites out now!  My mom put our party invites out the end of April, for our party this June. ~ Alli xoxo
