For someone who isn't my best friend or close family, as a couple we usually give $250.  Other than that it goes up depending on the relationship.

$150 is a good $$ amount HOWEVER, if they are having a tiny wedding where the plates are $30 bucks...then it might be too much.  This is a very personal choice question and its dependent on what you can afford and how comfortable you are with the final decision.  My assistant is getting married and im giving $150...her plates are $115.

It also depends on the culture...
