i have a simple question for those brides that there ceremony and/or reception areas have surrounding pay parking.... are you going to pay for your guests parking or are you making them pay?

I think you should pay because like any hostess with the mostess (LOL), you shouldn't have your guests pay for anything... BUT thats my opinion...

I am not sure how you'd go about paying for everyone...

Would you have pre-paid slips? Or would you have to have someone out there putting coins in the machines for everyone? I think it's more trouble than it's worth. IMO, most adult drivers are familiar with paid parking and will take care of their own. One more thing a bride doesn't need to stress about.

However, it would be polite to mention the paid parking situation on the map you include in the invitation, so people will be prepared.

We ran into this situation with our chosen venue, which happened to be right across from the Skydome and on the same day as an afternoon Jays game.

Our original plan was to (hopefully) provide a voucher in the invite for parking at a local lot.  I approached various local parking lots but nobody would do this, even with the assurance of a credit card number.  We also ran the risk of being overcharged for spots IF the lot operator so chose.

All lot operators would not go for this as they wanted to be prepaid in advance.  Also, they would NOT reserve spots and it would be a 'first come, first serve' basis.

In the end, I tried to secure a special rate but again, only if I prepaid.  There was no way to estimate how many cars would park in there and the problem was that if I didn't pay enough, the cars wouldn't get in.  And, if I overpaid, we wouldn't get a refund.

We felt badly that we weren't paying for our guests parking but it was simply way too difficult to manage.  We just couldn't find a way to make it work for everyone and in a way that financially made sense.  My parents ended up renting SUV limos to bring everyone from the east end down to Toronto so that really helped our guests out.  I know that a lot of our extended family carpooled as well.

I can't recall what the rate was but finally, we decided to identify all local paid parking lots on our map and included a little note about how the Steam Whistle did not have any site parking for guests.  We asked those with special circumstances (disabled or elderly, etc.) to advise and we would make sure we had parking available for them on site.

well i was at one wedding where they had an usher standing by the pay machine handing out change to pay for everyone... so that is one idea...

but if you are not going to pay, i think it would be a good idea to point out pay parking on the map so your guests are aware that they might have to pay. Most guests driving think there will be free parking available for your wedding so just assuming that they have change is sorta misjudging everyone... especially out of town guests that come from towns that you do not normally pay for parking...

I think that I would put a little note onto the invitations, or else I would just let it go around the families and friends that it would be paid parking, just to make sure that everyone knows.  I'd actually do both, because most people just look at the date and where the service is being held, honestly that's what I normally do.  Now I'm spending so much time trying to find out how I will word my own.

most guests shouldn't have an issue with having to pay a couple bucks for parking

but definately include a note in the invitation so they know to bring change and a map of lot locations and one way streets if any (also helpful to note which lots might take only loonies or only quarters, i've had that problem with downtown parking lots - and where they can pay by credit card)
