Our hall manger mentioned something about getting a SOCAN license.  What is it?  Where do we get one and does anyone know how much they cost?  Thanks...

it has something to do with music rights and stuff. Its included in the cost of our reception at the hotel. I wouldn't have a clue where to get a license!!

SOCAN is the agency in Canada that protects the copyrights of all music created by musicians. In order to play music at any event, you must buy a licence from them. If you go to their website, they have a list of various types of events, and the fees associated. And as the other person said, I have always seen that as part of the hall...

The website is www.socan.ca

If you're having a band or dj check with them too - lots of them cover that fee in their packages.

Usually the SOCAN fee is included with the venue price. It usually varies on whether there is dancing or not as well as how many people are at the wedding.  I found this on their website:

1-100 people: no dancing $20.56     with dancing: $41.13

101-300 people: no dancing $29.56     with dancing $59.17

301-500 people: no dancing $61.69     with dancing $123.38

Over 500 people: no dancing $87.40     with dancing $141.79

Why there's a difference between whether there's dancing or not I have no idea.
