I have never had long hair, mostly because I have the same problem with dry ends. I wanted to have a little glam and a longer look for our wedding so I found these Jessica Simpson "clip in" extensions. My hair stylist colour matched my hair and it looks great. It only takes a couple of minutes to secure and you style your hair around the clip in piece. If your hair is at least as long as a short bob you could probably make it work. They aren't horribly expensive either ($109).

I have worn both long and short hair in my life.  I (and FH) seem to like it long the best.  I am fairly lazy when it comes to styling and cutting.  I wear a style that is pretty wash and wear with the option of heavy styling if the occasion calls for it.

I tend to like just using a little anti-frizz syrum and that's it.  Mine currently sits at the bottom of my shoulder baldes and is naturally curly (read frizzy).  I have heard that if you play with your hair alot as well as wear it in a pony tail alot the hari could start to break in those places.  I only go for a cut every 5 months.
