I got engaged a couple of months ago and just started looking for a reception venue. Unfortunately, I absolutely HATE banquet halls! I would love to have an outdoor reception, but I'm not sure about the details. I mean, obviously it will have to be in the summer, but beyond that, I don't know where to start. If anyone has ever been to an outdoor reception and can offer some advice, I'd really appreciate it. If you know of any venues (I'm in Oakville) that might allow you to do this, that would be really helpful, too!

Kind of far, but have you considered Toronto Island, you can get a permit for dirt cheap and book a barbaque site, this includes picnic table and barbeques.  You would have to get a liquor license and all alcohol has to be purchased through the restaurants (not sure how this works, but they explain it when you call for your permit).

I went to one and it was a blast!  They bought a half drum bbq and made steak and potatoes, there was a decorated head picnic table, someone brought a laptop, so there was dancing and finally, the washrooms were just beside the site.

Wear a white wedding dress?  Why, are we bar hopping?

Hi Jill,

I think that you PM'd me but it was still anonymous  under the name so here is my liuna Gardens info..LOL..I did see the tent as we booked last summer and the tent was up. It is up all summer and they have weddings under it. As for me, there are two places on the property that you can book your ceremony at, the stone gazebo is one and the other is lakeside which is basically down a superlong concrete isle and very close to the lake. We booked at the gazebo for photo reasons as when you sign the registry, you do it in the gazebo and we loved the look of it. If it rains, not that it will be you then go into the tent. If under the tent is booked, then they set up a site in another room inside the hall....worst case scenario, you get married on the dance floor. I would check how many if any weddings are booked for the date you want. I would also suggest you look into this location quickly as it fills fast. We found the food quality, excellent, the prices are reasonable for sure and the service has always been fabulous. Most importantly to me is that whenever I call to ask the most ridiculous question of the manger, he always calls back usually the same day with an answer and a great attitude. I highly recommend Liuna Gardens obviously, LOL and I haven't had my wedding yet. Also, on your wedding dat, you are assigned a manager to oversee and make sure your wedding flows properly...like a wedding planner, forget what they call them. What else, they provide you with a package upon signing up with all kinds of contact info for photographers, florist, djs everything you can think of if you haven't already arranged for these people. I think I covered most of your questions but if you wish, PM me with an additional. I too live in Oakville and it is about a 40 minute drive so head out there on a Saturday in the a.m. as they are always having wedding starting at 1:30pm and you can see for yourself the set up etc. They let you look around, not in the private bridal suite if there is a bride there though of course. It is very impressive and very well maintained 12 acres I think they said. There is also a large wood swing that hangs from a tree off to the side that you can get your pics done on...thought that was cute too. Anyway, best of luck and happy planning.

Check any local park sites to see whether you can put up a tent and hold an outdoor reception for small fee.

We're possibly thinking of doing just that at Fort George in Niagara on the Lake. Doing it yourself will mean you have control over everything from food to decor and if you're stuck for time/inspiration consider hiring a wedding planner who can help you contact vendors and coordinate all those details.

What is your budget? That will make a big difference to what type of outdoor reception you're after.

There are tons of places that have outdoor setups - you can rent one of the city's historic mansions and rent a tent to have your reception outside.

Toronto & GTA locations of note (Just google them to find links to each):

-Graydon Hall
-Miller Lash House
-Eaton Hall
-Estates of Sunnybrook
-Spadina House
-Liberty Grand
-Parkwood Estate (Oshawa)

You might also check with the waterfront hotels - like the Westin Harbour Castle. I spoke to them yesterday - they have a Lakeview Terrace but I hear it's pretty windy so you have to plan accordingly. Not sure if they'd do the whole reception outside but they would do the ceremony out there.

There are a lot of places that have outdoor ceremonies and then the reception indoors too. You might want to check out Niagara region - there are wineries/vineyards and pretty inns, hotels and B&B's - it all depends on your budget and guest list size, really. Good luck!
