Hi ladies,
I know in some other parts of Canada (I'm in Toronto) it's commonplace to hold a fundraising "social" for the bride/groom to help raise money to fund the wedding. I'd like to do this because FH and myself are paying for about 80% of our wedding ourselves but not really sure how to go about it. I've done some Google searches but I haven't found a lot of detailed info.
Have any of you incorporated fundraisers into any of your pre-wedding events, and if so, what type? Did you do fundraising at your engagement party, stag/doe, "social" etc.? And if so, how much money do you think you can expect to raise from these things?
FH and I went to a stag/doe at a restaurant/bar a few years ago and they had some casino type games set up and were also selling raffle tickets but it didn't seem like the wedding party was all that enthused about trying to push guests to spend money on these games (they only did it half heartedly) and it didn't seem like guests were spending a whole lot on these games anyway.
I brainstormed a bunch of ideas trying to come up with something - i.e. holding a carnival themed bbq at a local park where you sell tickets for kids to play the games and win prizes, etc. and sell tickets for food/drinks etc. -
For something like this, you'd have to get a permit for the park (if you don't have a house w/ a yard like us), get some sort of canopy in case of rain (ok not necessity but helpful), food, drinks, ice to keep them all cool in coolers, then rent carnival games, etc.
It seemed to me that we'd spend a few hundred to hold it and wouldn't make much profit so wondered if it was more trouble than it was worth.
I welcome ALL ideas/suggestions and tried and true methods of raising money for the wedding. Looking forward to your responses!

A friend of mine held a "stag and doe" in Toronto where they chartered a streetcar to take them on a pub crawl and they sold tickets. The tickets were sold for about twice as much as the charted streetcar actually cost, so they ended up making a few bucks off the whole thing. it was SUPER DUPER fun and no one minded chippin' in a few extra bucks for the night.

You can charter a streetcar?? LOL You learn something new every day.
That would be awesome if DH and I had enough people who were interested in a pub crawl. But I'd imagine that chartering a bus or something to do something else that might appeal to a lot of people would maybe help. Like maybe a chartered bus trip to Niagara Falls or something or to Casinorama..... my Fiance's son's hockey team does casino bus trip fundraisers. I may consider this! Thanks for the idea.
Keep the ideas coming ladies!

We are doing the casino theme stag/doe and it looks like we are going to do pretty well despite not hosting the bar ourselves so I'm totally excited for it.

Very cool! Where are you holding it? Details please!! lol
I'm wondering - how much are you charging for tickets, what is the cost of holding this (and what is the basic breakdown of your involved costs)?
Just trying to get a feel for how much it would cost you to do something like this anywhere but at home, and how much potential to make cash there is. When I work it out it doesn't amount to a lot unfortunately... so I must be missing something.
I just got invited to a stag/doe today actually, and tickets are $10 for singles and $15 per couple.

We just had our social in winnipeg and it was AMAZING
My FW had her family set the majority of it up for us.
The one thing I will stress that works GREAT...
Have a theme day
We had an 80's social and a high majority of the crowd chose to use the occasion to get tacky with their clothing.
The DJ commented how he had never seen so many people dance for so long throughout the night (i assume because they already knew how ridiculous they all looked and thus were free to dance and look even crazier)
All in all, we didn't have that many people come. Not as many as we had origionaly hoped for ...but we still great great for having under 150$ show up.
We still brought home over $2500 and each and every person who left the place told us that it was the best social they have been to in a while...and many with wicked prizes.
Point is...theme party is the way to go!!!
Try 80's....it's super fun to see how tacky people can dress and do their makeup

. In everything I've read on the subject, the B&G should have nothing to do with the "fund raising". . Yes, I realize these "parties" are thrown in certain areas of the country and are usually partial to the area in which you're in, circles your in, family cultures, etc. but overall it's bad etiquette for the B&G to be involved.
If the bridal parties or families want to throw them a Jack/Jill - Stag/Doe than let the BP go all out, don't have the B&G get involved, it's extremely poor taste. Might as well just put an ad in the paper asking for donations. :/
