| Hi all, my wedding is set for June 6 2009. I haven't started wedding dress shopping yet, I plan to start next month. What I am wondering tho is how do alterations on dresses work, I do not intend to buy a dress that is to small and try to loose weight to fit into it. But say I do loose the 40lbs that I am trying to before my wedding, will they be able to alter my dress 6 months from now when it comes in to fit? Just exactly how much can a wedding dress be taken in? Have any of you had your dress altered significantly and if so how did it turn out? Any advice is appreciated!

| I was in the same boat (kinda) I did wait until the almost last second to get my dress (7 months and take 6 months to get in) I was losing weight pretty steady average 2 lbs a week/ 1 sz a month so I tried on a Size six...it JUST fit and I didnt wanna bet on losing anymore so I ordered an 8 thinking they can always take in and cant take out. WELL...my dress came in ALL wrong! They said it was an 8 but it was smaller than the six and I KNOW i had lost more weight since then so she had to take my dress in and it barely fit...it was pretty much jimmy rigged together but you cant tell in the pictures. So, my suggestion is buy a dress that fits and dont bet on aleterations being PERFECT but if it must be done taking in is WAY easier than letting out especially depending on the material you are buying. I bought silk taffida and she could only alter it once because after that the material would show the stitch marks and litteraly not take anymore altering (falling apart) so ask questions to the sales lady ie: who will alter? What matertial and is it easily altered OR goes as far as speaking with the seamstress personally before making ANY final decisions.

| My dress was ordered one size smaller...I was trying on dresses at a size 20 (EEEEEEEEEEEK!) so I ordered a size 16, now I am a size 14 or less.....I went to try it on today because it was at the cleaners and it is huge on me....I am getting married September 20 and will wait a bit longer say end of August before I get the alterations done..... I went today for the first time to look at dresses. I asked this same question and the saleslady said that a corset back dress is most forgiving for size. That might be something to keep in mind. I have some weight to lose as well but I am going to order the size my measurements are on the day I buy it. I don't want to stress about squeezing into something that may not fit if for whatever reason I don't lose it.

My friend had to get her dress sized down 4 sizes! I'm not kidding! She bought her dress a year before she got married and lost a ton of weight. She had a great seamstress, so the dress looked perfect and fit like a glove! The tag on it says it is a size 12, but actually is a size 8 now!
I bought my dress in February and tried it on a couple days ago and it is probably now a size too big in the hips/waist area. Thankfully I am very confident with sewing and plan to alter it myself this weekend.
