About 3 weeks ago my hand and wrist started to get really sore when doing various things. As the weeks have progressed it became worse. Now the simple task of holding a fork in my right hand causes my thumb and first two fingers to become slightly numb. In the mornings I can barely lift the milk jug out of the fridge from weakness and pain and when I straighten my hair my hand becomes numb from holding the straightener. Now that I am back at work after a 4 day holiday it seems to be even worse! Constant aching in my wrist!

Anyone else suffering like me?

I suffered what you call "Pregnancy Carpel Tunnel".    So I feel your pain!!   The pain was so bad especially in the mornings when I get out of bed.   I could hardly grip my toothbrush to brush my teeth properly!   My fingers were so numb, that I constantly had them pressed against an ice pack just so I can get some feeling back.   It was awful.

What you can do to find some relief, is buy yourself a WRIST SPLINT.  Wear it during the nights.   I found it helped a little, although I was still getting some pain in the mornings.  But it did help reliefve the pain during the night!     Also by placing ice packs on your wrist/fingers can help relieve the pain too.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it, except to wear a wrist splint.   The reason why you suddenly have it, is because your medium carpel nerve around your wrist area is swollen.  And it's because (if you are pregnant) you are starting to retain water.  And when you retain water, you swell.

So try a wrist splint.  Most doctors will just tell you do to this anyway.  The only other thing to do is surgery.  But that's only if it is really really bad, and has been persistant for years.

After you give birth, the carpel tunnel will go away.    You'll be amazed how all of a sudden the pain disappears.  However the numbness will linger around for a few weeks.  But don't worry, that will go away too.

Yoda, yes I am pregnant and I had read somewhere that pregnancy can trigger CT to flare up. I think I will go buy a splint tomorrow. I need to have some relief. Being at work is killing me as I have a desk job and am constantly at the computer. Hopefully a wrist splint will help. That's for your input! I greatly appreciate it!

Just my two cents...

I had carpal tunnel as a result of my pregnancy, and ended up getting surgery on my right hand about 2 1/2 mos before my baby was born. The doctor was concerned because it started early in my pregnancy, and the longer the symptoms persist, the more permanent the nerve damage can be.

I would suggest talking to your doctor about it as well. I ended up with wrist splints for both hands at night. My left hand wasn't as bad, and didn't require surgery. It still gets numb now though, depending on how I've slept. I also got a thermal wrist "sleeve" that helped on my left wrist. It helps regulate the temperature of your wrist (ie. warmer = better blood flow). I wore that during the day.

I'd try to avoid the surgery if possible. My hand was soooo swollen, and I couldn't take anything more than reg. strength Tylenol for the pain. The whole experience wasn't fun, but worth it now.

If it is effecting your work, you should mention it to your boss.  He/she should do provide you with something to make your work station more comfortably.  I had one of those gel wrist pads for my keyboard when I type.  It was alot more comfortable with it.

I had gotten the carpel tunnel near the end of my 2nd trimester.    It just worse and worse.  When I spoke to my doctor about it, she just told me to wear a wrist splint, and that it will go away after the pregnancy.    I suppose for some, it actually stays.

I bought a wrist splint and it has been helping. I just find it difficult at work to type with it on. But I notice that if I wear it at night I don't wake up with the achy/numbness in my hand!

Thanks for your advice Yoda!

I had it too, really really bad in my right hand.  I couldn't even move it in the mornings as well.

But its true what they say, it goes away RIGHT AFTER the baby is born no word of a lie.  I remember the next day I delivered and I was lying on the hospital bed thinking, oh yea......???? its gone
