We have laminate throughout our house and it's ok...but pretty high maintence (sp?). We have to wipe up after the dog (he drools a lot) otherwise the wear does show, and when we were painting, someone left a wet rag on the floor and it left a huge mark. Also, you want to go with flooring that comes with the undermat or doesn't need it and while you can do it yourself, be prepared, it's a pain, ours chipped a couple times and we had to start all over. It also can ship if you drop something heavy on the floor- which can be a pain in the kitchen! But really it depends on the look you are going for because carpet does have its downs as well...laminate is fine, but you do need to know that it takes work as well (especially with a seven year old and a drooly dog!)

DonnaBella (7/17/2008) I would choose carpet over laminate, just for resale value....laminate seems cheap, I would not do it.
Ditto -- especially since you're talking about the upper floor.

Laminate these days is pretty cool looking(go for the individual slabs...not the set of 3...the set of three look cheaper).....i would say coming from someone who just bought a house....go with laminate...it is sooo much cleaner and healthier....it creeps me out that i have carpet upstairs and the people who we bought the house from have a dog and i get freaked out thinking about whats under that carpet...its only 5 years old but...still.....the dog may have peed or pooped and...can you ever really clean right down to the underpadding???? we are having it dry cleaned before we move in but...still.....carpet traps so much dust and dirt..if you have ever lifted carpet after like 10 years...even ones kept very clean..the underpadding is gross....soo...my vote would be for laminate...you can always get nice area rugs if you want to.......and..i know someone said laminate is hard to maintain but...imagine dog drool on carpet???? you dont see it...it stays in there...at least with laminate you can see it and clean it?

I chose laminate. I find carpet is never really clean. It traps dirt, dust and pet hair. I find having laminate/hardwood/tile is so much more sterile and much friendlier on my allergies

That's a tough call ... I really like carpet, but we had brand new carpet in our place (just over a year ago) and trust me it looks nothing like brand new now! Plus it's a bit of a pain to have to vacuum. But if you are up for maintaining it, carpet is nice. We however aren't lol, DH keeps complaining about how he is going to rip it all out and put laminate in, therefore that is what my vote went for
