I would never put laminate anywhere but the entry and dining room.  Laminate is cold and looks cold.  Carpet is not that bad to maintain.  My carpet is beige and the previous owners had kids and we have pets and the carpet steaming company last year (who know when done last) said it was in good shape for 10 year old carpet.  It just makes my house cosier.  JMO

I prefer laminate any day of the week. With pets and small children they have accidents and there's no way you're going to clean that pee/poo stains thoroughly (even if it was steam cleaned). I think both carpet and laminate have their pros and cons, but for resale (as a buyer) I'd totally be digging the laminate. You can always put some nice rugs when you're having open houses to make it *look* like they could have the best of both worlds.
