| I just saw a Duracell ad that showed a child locator device that I though was interesting - probably not something that everyone would invest in, but if you have a child that tends to wander or are going somewhere particularly busy (ie. travelling to Disneyland or something), it might be worth the investment: http://www.brickhouse-childsafety.com/locator.html Just thought I'd share!

| I'm not sure how I feel about this device. On one hand, it seems wonderful, but on the other, I worry that it would make parents less...vigilant, I guess, about watching their child. It might give a parent the attitude of "Oh, I don't have to watch my kid, the thing will beep if he/she wanders off". In my mind, technology is not always 100% and what if the device happens to not be working properly the day my kid wanders off? I don't know...I'm interested in hearing other opinions.

I think this is a great product if parents still keep an eye on their kids and not use it with the attitude of "it will beep when they are too far"and just simply do not watch their kids - just as OP said...
I would be a great item to have for family vacations (such as Disney)

| I thought about this device and this what I came up with lol ... I do not feel this would make me any less watchful of my son (3 and a half) but that is because of my personality, although im not sure you are not correct in assuming that it would some parents. I think if I were to take my son on another vacation I may think about it. At my sons age there is a real tug and pull between child and parent. As a parent we cant keep our children in strollers forever ( ) and children need to roam and walk/run ( within safe distance) however, this can be very scary. My son is the type of child that gets a lot of attention simply because (although being totally cute)he is VERY outgoing. I have no doubt that it would be very easy for someone to take his hand or eve pick him up and walk away with him. Infact someone tried that once. We took my son to flamborough downs to see the horses , we were inside looking out the windows...hubby, my sisters and I were sitting in the 1st row of seats before the window and my son was standing up looking out the windows, an older women came walking by and picked him up and started to walk to the doors leading outside; Hubby and I leapt to our feet and my hubby grabed our son and proceeded to ask (in a not nice way) what she thought she was doing to which she replied " I thought he would want to see the horses up close" !. Can you believe the nerve ? But it truly makes you see how fast something can happen. And although we all say we will not let our children out of our sight, thats not accurate. At time every parent will turn to look at something even just quickly and thats all it could have taken for a sicko to have acted. However, I wouldnt buy one just for everyday, but taking him in an airport and on vacation again I think I may. IMO.

I think I will invest in a leash. You know those cute unicorn backpack kind with a lead that will only go 3 feet or so.

However, I wouldnt buy one just for everyday, but taking him in an airport and on vacation again I think I may. IMO. I have to agree - I can't imagine that it would make me any less watchful, but it might be reassuring to have in a crowded place - especially an unfamiliar one. I wouldn't buy something like this for everyday use, but for travelling I might look at it as an extra little bit of insurance. I can't believe how horrifying that must have been, to see someone try to walk away with your child. I hope she was sincere and was just wacko... This reminds me though, of something my MIL told me once. They tried for several years to have children, and finally decided to consider adoption (all 3 of her children are adopted) when she got to the point that she was seriously considering snatching a child in a grocery store or somewhere. She said the only thing that stopped her was that she knew she wouldn't get away with it. Scary thought, but it shows the kind of desperation some people get to...
