| While it is true that the distraught owners were really speeding, this cop was way out of line and the poor dog died. Here's the video if you haven't seen it on the news. This cop was very heartless in my opinion and his comment when to the distraught owners who were racing to get their dog to an emergency clinic to "Relax, you can get another dog" would have probably gotten me an assault charge. Disgusting and heartless!! http://www.oliverwillis.com/2008/08/18/texas-cop-paul-stephens-kills-family-dog-by-being-an-ass/

This disgusts me. My dog is like my kid and I would be speeding to the Vet Emerg too!

Sorry to revive an old thread.... but I have 4 cats and a dog so I'm not just saying this as an insensitive non-pet person.
While I agree that the cop was wrong to say "you can get another dog", everyone who has pets and/or kids should know the basics of what to do in an emergency, including what to do in the event of choking.
If the emergency vet is so far away that you can't get there in less than 4 minutes, *doing the speed limit*, the chances of the dog living and recovering to a normal life were slim to start with.
Driving at 100 miles an hour puts PEOPLE's lives at risk, and while my pets *are* a part of my family, killing a human (even unintentionally) puts you in jail. I would rather be alive, have my DH alive, lose my dog and not go to jail than know that my dog is alive but someone is dead (or worse than that, manage to kill my dog, myself and my DH!).
That's all I have to say.
