I saw on one of those 'Mommy Shows' that instead of picking them up out of the crib and rocking to just kneel down beside the crib and put your arms through the bars to comfort.  One placed on the head the other patting the bum and using shh, shh, shhhhh.  I have used this when Camy has a hard time going down.  Using this method makes them feel safe and comforted but it also breaks the rocking to sleep.  Good luck and keep me updated on how it goes.  Hope you have a better night tonight.

sorry i don't have any advice...i'm in the same boat!  Connor would only nap during the day if someone was holding him, for the first 5 months!!!  talk about exhausting!! Now, he'll only sleep during the day if we put him laying down in his stroller & do "round a bouts" through the kitchen;livingroom.  At night, he has to be asleep before i put him in the crib or he'll freak out.  I don't have the heart to have him cry himself to sleep.  i don't mind it.  he's only been up once during the night for the last couple of months, with a couple bad nights thrown in there.   And a few times, he hasn't woken up until 5-6 am!!!! yippee!!! we're gettin' there!!!!  I wish you good luck with your lo!!!!  let us know how its going.

Nolan was the same way.  He had to be rocked to sleep everytime, naps and night time.  I started around 2 months sitting beside the bassinet patting his back and "shhhh"ing.  It took a long time at first (like hours), he would fall asleep and wake up after 10 minutes when he realized I was gone.  I continued doing this, if he cried I would pick him up calm him down and then start over.  Slowly it began to take less and less time to get him to sleep.  Once he could handle that we put him in his crib in his room.  After about a month of doing the same thing in his crib he is just now (at almost 5 months) able to put himself to sleep at night.   He still needs help at nap.  It was a long process but I stuck to it and it soo paid off.  Good luck at getting your LO to sooth himself, it is a tough one.

When I want my lo to fall asleep on her own, I put her in her swing or have her in my arms and when she shows signs of sleep, I put her in her crib. At the beginning, she would cry a little. I stayed by her side and put the music of the mobile. I also tried to give her the pacifier but she's not a big fan of the pacifier. I would leave the room and come back after a minute or so if she was still crying. Most of the time it was more being fussy than crying. If she cried a lot, big crisis, I would pick her up right away. It could take up to 15-20 min. for her to fall asleep but now she hardly ever cries when I put her doew. She usually sleeps right away wihout any sound.

Sometimes I do this for her nap but sometimes I let her nap in her swing or she naps while we go out with the stroller. Sometimes she naps in my arms and it's my treat as much as hers! I don't want her to have a specific routine for napping because sometimes we're on the go and I still want her to be able to sleep. So I try to change her napping environment during the day. At night, when we're home, I give her a bath, bottle and then rock her to sleep.

The thing is that each baby is very different and what works for one doesn't for another... I guess you have to try different things and figure what you and your baby like best. Some moms can't let the baby cry and others won't mind so you have to do what you're comfortable with.

Proud mom of baby girl Raphaëlle since May 22!

You can also try the shh/pat method. That worked well for us when our LO when trying to calm him to put him down before he fell fully asleep.

We do that now when he gets fussy (teething, nightmares,etc...) and is still lying down.

If he stands in his crib we Shhhh and hug (i dont take him out though) and tell him hes a good boy, its night night time untill he is ready then I lay him back down on his pillow and he goes right back to sleep.
