Hi Ladies,

I am feeling pretty down about this. My little Hadleigh and I were doing so well at breastfeeding till about 4 weeks ago. She will be 8 weeks tomorrow. She has become very picky about feeding. She likes it when I am not too hard or too soft. So I was expressing some milk before feeds so she would stay on. She is a big baby and she is eating every two hours so it is hard for me to be that perfect firmness when she is eating all the time. I have been pumping for the last 4 weeks and my milk supply is slowly going away. I am so sad because it was going so well right away.

I still try to put her on the breast everytime we feed and sometimes she will get on for a couple of minutes and then pull off. She gets so upset and frustrated when I try to get her back on. It just makes things worse. I have tried a lactation consultant, the health nurse, calling the nurses on the maternity floor, etc. I even got a double pump to help things along but even with that my milk isn't coming in any faster.

So Hadleigh has had some bottles of formula because she was starving and I couldn't take hearing her cry the way she was. I truly wanted to breastfeed for longer but I just don't think it will be possible.

I guess I am just sad and needed to hear from you ladies on the subject. Thanks for listening and any advice or understanding will help!

Heather

I have no advice because Makayla and I are still working on BF everyday. She's doing much better now but it's still not perfect.

I'm surprised a LC or nurse could not help. What do they say?
You can still bring in your supply can't you? It's not too too late if you still have some milk left is it?

I wish you all the luck with this because I understand how frustrating it can be!! Just don't give up. I had issues too and didn't give up as much as I wanted to. I'm glad I didn't because things have gotten better!!

GOOD LUCK!!!

There are herbs that you can take to increase your milk supply available at local health food stores. They are Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle (take 3 capsules of each one 3 times a day).

Also seeing a lactation consultant would be very helpful - but make sure you find one you like. They have lots of resources for you!

What I did, when we had supply issues, was to use a supplemental nursing system. It is a tube that goes to the breast and the other end is in an upside down bottle and when the baby sucks, they get both the milk and the stuff inside the bottle (formula or breastmilk). This helps increase your supply naturally because the baby is stimulating the breast for an increased period of time telling your body to make more milk, and your baby is getting all the nutrition they need at the same time.

Medela (who also makes great breast pumps) have one (you can see it on their website). You can wear this bottle as a necklace while you are breastfeeding and not have to worry about holding extra objects.

The biggest thing is to not give up! You can do it and you have already done wonders by breastfeeding! It does take some work, but I can speak from experience, my DD is about a year old and we are still a nursing team

Heather I'm sorry you're having such a hard time with this and I know exactly how you feel. Austin and I took a good 2 weeks to learn how to feed. Could Hadleigh be so picky because she's getting bottles? Maybe she doesn't like to work so hard. Austin used to only have pumped  milk through a bottle and now he's totally a boob man. He gags and makes a funny face before finally taking the bottle. I know it frustrating but if you enjoy BF as much as I do then don't give up on it just yet and if you do need to quit and formula feed DON'T feel guilty because it doesn't make you a bad mother!

Thanks for all your help ladies. I think Hadleigh likes the bottle better then the breast now, unfortunately. I may just have to continue pumping to feed her along with the formula. I will look into Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle capsules after I chat with the Lataction Consultant again.

It's not the way I wanted this to go but at least she is still getting more breastmilk then formula.

You can also consider a nipple shield. It is a silicone nipple that goes on the breast and simulates a bottle nipple. That may help you avoid pumping to feed bottles.

Try contacting Dr. Jack Newman too....or his website - lots of great info there (and videos)

Makayla was the same way because I introduced the bottle at day 5 of her life because she was so hungry and not latching correctly. I kept giving her my boob even though it was stressful and she would cry of hunger. After a few days of this ,she learnt to take my boob again. Don't give up if you really want to BF!!
