Hi,

I would like to have musicians for the ceremony but I was just wondering how much they cost and for what...I just called someone today and she charges 625 for the ceremony (she's a harpist so its just her), although it also includes taxes and travel. I do have another contact to call for pricing but I was just wondering what everyone else is being charged and for what ie. harpist, violinist, cellist, etc.

My church gave me a list of people they have that sing for the church.  I can't remember if its $200 or $250.  The lady I am having is a singer/organist.  I also had the option of a singer/guitarist and one other.  Check with your ceremony location first because they may not allow outsiders in and/or the people that normally sing/play there will know the system, echoes, etc.  Good luck!

Keep Smiling

The priest gave us the numbers of the organist that play at the church, One lady costs $250 and the other $75. Big difference!

We paid $150 for the soloist and $150 for the organist through the church.

I'm a violinist, and have freelanced in Toronto for years, so I can let you know the Toronto rates. I don't know how they are in other cities.

Basic rate for ensembles is 100 dollars an hour, per musician. Some musicians also charge a bit more for the first hour--let's say 120 or something, and a little less for the second hour.

So if you wanted a string trio to play for your ceremony (1 hour) and cocktails (1 hour) that would be:

$120 for first hour
$100 for the next hour
=$220 x 3 musicians = $660

This is just a ballpark--give or take a hundred bucks.

NOW there are some things that can change that basic rate.

1) Travel. Is your wedding far out of town? Gas prices are up, and musicians charge travel rates.

2) Special considerations. Some instruments are more expensive, like harp. Your harpist who is charging you $600 or whatever has good reason--it is costly and difficult to move a harp around. So she is not only charging you for her work, but also the cost of renting a special harp-moving van and getting her harp to your venue.

3) Organizing fee. If you are hiring a wedding company who hires out their musicians, they will include in your fee the cost of organizing the music with you and finding the musicians. Like a finders fee.

4) Special musical requests. Say you really want to walk down the aisle to a string arrangement of that Coldplay song. That's going to cost you extra. Some musicians are happy to arrange music, some can't.

Good luck!

P.S. Singing soloists will charge a bit more than I quoted you.

P.P.S. People hired for a Catholic ceremony will often charge a bit more, knowing that they'll have to be there for over an hour.

I'm a soloist in a Catholic church in Thunder Bay, so I can offer a little Northern context.

I charge $100 for a wedding - just a ceremony or full mass.  More if the bride wants to meet more than once or twice.

My preferred accompanist charges $100.

I have worked with soloists and organist/pianists that charge $75-150 depending on their level of education/experience.

Hope that helps!
