I wouldn't risk it either. They should understand but if you think they might be a little peeved then I would tell them that you spoke to your doctor and he suggested that you don't come into contact with anyone who might have been exposed.

If you are worrying about now, imagine how much more you will worry once they are all sitting around your dining room table!!!

This would be lying, since her doctor did say it was OK. Direct contact means rubbing her body up against his. It does not mean seeing him at the dinner table or even sitting next to him at the table.

I think it would be better to be honest and say that even though the risk is extremely small, I'd feel better not taking that risk. There is a greater risk to the mother who gets chicken pox during pregnancy than to the baby, especially during the first 20 weeks. I think any reasonable person would understand that. She mentioned that she did have chicken pox as a child and most likely has immunity, but again, if she knows in advance, why risk it?

Take advantage of the situation to have a great intimate dinner with your DH... they will become very rare after your lo is born!

Buy something you guys really love to eat and enjoy yourselves!

Proud mom of baby girl Raphaëlle since May 22!

Oooh!  I agree!!!!

It's too bad you can't host dinner (I don't blame you), but at least this way you get a nice quiet long weekend with your guy!

I wouldn't feel bad about saying this.  Especially if it can avoid an akward situation with the guests.  Nobody's feelings would be hurt this way.

I'm no expert with this but I have a close friend who was told by her doctor to stay away from a family function because her sister had shingles.

I wouldn't consider it canceled... just postponed.  Have everyone over for Thanksgiving dinner for the American Thanksgiving instead.  You still get to have everyone over for a holiday dinner, his shingles should have run their course by then, and its still Thanksgiving dinner - even if its not *our* Thanksgiving.
