Hi there. I am a future 2009 bride. We currently booked our venue for November 2009 but some unfortunate circumstances have arised. Some illnesses in our family have occurred and now my future MIL was diagnosed with cancer. Its been so hard on my FH's side of the family. Not to mention my brother has been quite ill also...

Anyways, both FH and I are emotionally, physically and financially drained. I don't want to do this huge portuguese/italian $25,000 wedding. FH is so stressed as I am too...I wont get into any more details but on to my question....

This might be crazy....but I thought today how nice it would be to surprise FH with an all inclusive trip to the DR or Mexico and just get married peacefully with our son by our side????? I don't know how much that would cost but I thought it would be nice and intimate. Maybe Ill share with family and those who want to join can do so but it would be nice to be the 3 of us can share this special moment.

So has anyone went away to get married with little or no family there to help celebrate......

ALSO, how much is it? I've heard of DW costing a lot of money, but I thought just something simple and elegant would be nice.

We already made a deposit but If i were to share with my venue of what is happening, maybe he can re-sell our wedding date and just transfer our deposit to do a little party when we return?????????

HELP! What do you all think?

Thank you!

Diane

I think that's a great idea and a heck of a lot less stress too! I wanted a DW very badly and we briefly looked into an "elopement package" where we get an AI at a resort but also little things like a romantic dinner for 2 on the beach, bottle of champagne, small cake to share, officiant to perform ceremony etc...

For an all inclusive in general, you're looking at anywhere between $900-$2000 a person. This depends heavily on where you choose (DR much cheaper than Mexico)and if you can do a last minute deal (if you notice there's tons out there right now at 4 star places for around $1000). I had wanted quite a nice resort in the Mayan Riviera so would have been about $1800 p.p. I'm not doing this whole thing since my Mother and Father would NEVER let me live it down and I would be guilt-tripped forever.

If someone in your family is sick, consider that it may be doubly important to them to actually be there. So might want to open it up to just immediate family.

Good luck!

We did exactly what you are considering!! We planned a 20 thousand dollar wedding locally and then at Christmas time last year, we looked at eachother and realized it was not what we wanted. We were doing it for everyone else and as much as we loved our family/friends, it wasn't what we wanted. We lost our deposit on our venue, but that was ok with us!!!

So, we told our immediate family (parents, siblings) that we were going to elope, just the two of us..... 3 months later, we were married in Cuba, just the two of us and we wouldn't have changed any of it for the world. It was PERFECT!!!!

Good luck!

Thank you Aprilbride for that reply!! Its good to hear that some of you have done what we are considering.

I don't know what FH will decide. He knows my decision, I do not want this big stressful wedding, I never wanted this, we booked the venue because HE wanted it! But after talking again lastnight hes realizing that we just can't do it financially. Right now his mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer, the next few months are going to be so difficult....I would love to pay for her to come with us once she is finished treatment and gets the OK to go!

I should hear from my planner tomorrow to see what she has come up with!
AprilBride, did it take you 3 months to plan it?

She is looking up quotes for Jan or Feb...Or April/May.

Thanks...it makes me feel better that we are not the only one to change plans last minute. FH is a little upset by this but knows that we can't afford this Nov 2009 wedding. AND I would rather lose the deposit from our venue than spending over 20 grand for it!

Hi...sorry to hear about all the stress you family is going though...

We changed our minds so many times my best friend didn't believe me when I told her we had finally decided to get married on the beach, just the 2 of us while away on a cruise that was already booked!

I couldn't stand the stress of planing a 'big' at home wedding - it was seriously causing me to get sick. We had booked a church, a hall etc for Oct 09...then we booked this cruise in August & decided in Sept that we were getting married on Nov 5. So little stress...the bigges worries have been dealing with the vendor HERE - jeweller, seamstress etc...

I would recommend it in a heart beat - but make sure you guys discuss it at lenght TOGETHER...and decide if you are going to tell you families and how you will deal with their reactions.

Good luck!

It didnt take 3 months to plan it, but we wanted to go in April because it was after Easter and Christmas, which was important to us. We also wanted to give our work time to come up with a plan to cover for us when we were gone.
