[font=Comic Sans MS]I'm contemplating getting my dress made by a seamstress - I know exactly what I want and I was wondering if anyone on this dress board knows someone who has done this? If you do....was the experience positive? my aunt knows a great seamstress and I have seen her work on formal evening dresses for my aunt but I'm a bit nervous about getting her to make my wedding dress....advice please! If I had gotten married in New Zealand, I think my dress would have been made by a seamstress friend of mine. I don't think you have to be nervous. If you trust your seamstress, they will tell you what they can and can't pull off

Yikes!! My girlfriend had hers made, and that's exactly what it looked like was...made!! and this is a very well know bridal dressmaker..but it just didn't have the look that the dresses from the designer's

and you don't know what it will look like until its made and what if you hate it? at leat a store bought gown, you can try the sample on..you know what your getting, and my friend, paid just as much, because she wanted beadwork and lace..so..it's your call!! good luck!

i think the key is listening to the dressmaker's expertise. if they think a certain kind of fabric won't make something look how you want it to look, listen to them! i knew someone who wanted something made in taffeta, but the picture had it in chiffon; the seamstress tried to tell her it wouldn't look the same, but she didn't listen, and was very disappointed with the outcome, and didn't end of paying for it in full.

Ditto!  My girlfriend had hers made by a professional seamstress. Yes the dress was pretty but yes....it did look made as well. Ultimately by the time she paid for all her material and the hours put into it, she paid a hell of a lot more than what she would have paid in the store.  I personally wouldn't recommend it.  JMO.
