Hey girls,

So my dermatologist wants to put me on Accutane if all my problems haven't cleared up in the next 2 months....

I have heard there are some bad side effects while you're on it.....but I've also heard from people who have been on it they absolutetly do not regret taking it....

If you've taken it - what's your opinion??? What were your side effects?

Thanks!!!!!

My brother actually took this. He was getting some real bad breakouts. His skin did get very sensitive and dried up to the point it was flaky but I thought it was worth it because he doesn't get any break outs. Maybe once in a blue moon he gets a few here and there but it's a dramatic difference.

I only wish my doc would have told me to do it!! I was put on every antibiotic under the sun and creams and crap. Nothing worked for me. At this point in my life though I'm wanting to start up my little family so this definately would be a big nono..

I don't think you have much to lose, rather lots to gain from taking accutane. You'll be amazed. It'll suck for the time that you are on it but I'd suffer a few months for clear skin the rest of my life!

I had also tried every other antibiotic under the sun. My older brother was put on accutane, and I was when i hit 15.

And yes, there are some side effects. flaky skin, chapped lips beyond repair (absolutley nothing helped!), the inside of my nose was always dry and i became prone to nose bleeds during this time. I had normal acne of my face, but the main reason i was put on it was for my back. Since i was young I had been plagued with 'bacne'! Going on accutane was the best thing i ever did as it cleared up within 6-7 months. the only regret i have is not doing it sooner as i now have scars all along my lower back

good luck to you!  it ll be a rough time but just remember it is all worth it in the end!

As long as you're not looking to start a family in the next while it's worth a shot.

My doctor wanted to put me on it after nothing was working and started me on birth control (to get me started since you have to be on it when on Accutane), and the birth control ended up completely clearing up my face and back! WHOO!

My bro was on it though, and his face and lips dried up so bad he would flake everywhere and ruined a lot of pillow cases and pillows by blooding them up.  Same thing happened to my friends who were on it.

But it worked!  And if nothing else is working, the few months to a year or so of uncomfortable-ness might be worth it...

I know my brother has a lot of scars all over his face still (think Bill Murray - his acne was SuPER bad though), but my friends just had the regular girl acne that wouldn't go away (but wasn't pock-marky making) and their faces are clear clear clear now.

2 courses of accutane for me.  One when I was about 18 and the next at 20/21.  Each one was 5 months long.

It wasn't fun but it worked.  I had similar issues: dry nose (to the point of regular bleeding), super dry/cracked lips, and no oil (i.e. my hair never got greasy - which was cool!).  Can't say for sure if there were emotional side-effects (I was in highschool/university and the years were full of issues to begin with!).  My liver function was definitely affected (as most are and you have bloodwork every 6 weeks, including a negative pregnancy test) and my cholesterol hit an all-time high (I'm tested annually as I have high cholesterol to begin with).

It's worth a good heart to heart with your doc.

Why is it bad to be on Accutane while trying to start a family or while being pregnant?

I don't know if there ARE confirmed side effects for the baby, or if there is a HUGE fear of side effects...

I just know that if they could have put my brother on birth control as well they would have.
