So on Saturday night we went to my MIL's house for dinner and of course the whole family was there. SIL was telling me how her 9 month old was really cranky as he was teething. The poor kid was crawling around crying after her everywhere just wanting to be held and wasnt himself at all. Then at the end of the night she pointed out to me that he also had a strange rash on his back and belly that she had noticed earlier that day. The next day she called to tell us that her DS had woken up that morning with a complete outbreak. She took him to the dr and sure enough he has the measles. Her dr said that the chances of my DS getting them are "slim" beacuse of DS's age.

After doing some research DS was around him at the most contagious time and they were sharing toys! DS has people coming in from out of town on the 26th for his baptism which is now right around the time where he would break out if he is going to. I took him to the dr yesterday and she said to cross my fingers that he still has my immunity as that is all I can hope for at this point. She said she will not give him the immuno globulin shot as he is a healthy kid. I called public health this morning and asked for my public health nurse to give me a call. I am not happy.

The best part...DH's family is making it out like it is no big deal. SIL says she feels bad, but at least he will have gotten them. MIL says "its just baby measles" To me, there is a vaccine for them for a reason and that is like saying "its just polio".

Am I overreacting?

IMO, Yep!

If Lucas was a lot older, I'd march him over to your SIL's house to get them.

I don't think you are over reacting.  You're right. There is a vaccinne for them for a reason - so that we can get rid of them.  Although, that won't help you now.  I hope that your lo won't get them. Hopefully the breastfeeding will help!!!

I think you are right to be concerned. I think your SIL should have kept her sick child home the moment she noticed the rash, but hindsight is always 20/20. A lot of people haven't seen measles in recent years so are not aware how serious this disease can be. I know being mad about it won't change the outcome any but I'd probably be over the moon in worry if it was my child, too.

Anthony will have a lot of your antibodies transferred during the pregnancy and breastfeeding will transfer some of your immunity too. Since you were exposed too, you've probably got a boost to your immunity. All you can do is keep breastfeeding, keep him well-rested and well-nourished, and hope for the best.

I've always been told that measles is highly contagious (about 95% of people exposed will get the disease) but I'm not aware if that number changes with age group. It makes sense since babies will have immunity from their mothers, assuming the mothers are immune. Babies don't get the MMR vaccine until after 1 year old. I'd doubt that Anthony will have immunity if he gets measles since his immune system is still so young. I'd still continue with that vaccine when it is due since even if he is immune, you can't have too much immunity only too little.

As you can see, vaccines not only protect those that have received the shot but those who haven't by limiting the spread of the disease. Since MMR has been associated with autism (upon further investigation, researchers have determined that there is NOT a link between this vaccine and autism), many parents are skeptical of this vaccine and opt out of it. Unfortunately your son and nephew will suffer because of it. I hope that Anthony does not get measles and that your nephew recovers without complications.

And why anyone would purposefully expose their child to this disease rather than get the vaccine is completely beyond me. Why would you want your child to suffer like that for 2 weeks in the best case scenario and expose him/her to serious complications in the worst case scenario? I don't get it.
