I just got a call from my obstetrician's office saying that my 1 hour glucose test came back showing the levels are elevated. I now have to go tomorrow morning for the 2 hour test (I also get my Rhogam shot tomorrow -- will be really done with seeing hospitals and labs and doctors by the end of tomorrow).
My question is how many of you have had to have both tests? Did you end up being diagnosed with gestational diabetes? (I'm just wondering how much/how little you can gauge from the 1 hour test results.)
Update
So, as it turns out things didn't go as I was hoping. The results were back in today and I do have gestational diabetes. I have an appt with the gestational diabetes clinic on Monday, and will be followed by another doctor as well. Hopefully this will be easily managed and there will be no ill effects to baby.

| Hi, I also had to do the 2 hour test (it's 3 blood tests! ) but I haven't received a call from the office yet? I am really hoping they don't call! They weren't going to re-test me with the 2 hr. test until at 31 weeks I had sugar show up in my urine. My doctor told me that the first test was right on the border line so she thought she would test me incase. Hopefully I don't have GD? I think it's fairly common to have to go back and do the 2 hr. test? I know a few people who have had to do this and it came back negative or low and it was more just a scare. Wishing you luck!! Make sure you fast! I fasted for 12 hours 9pm-9am.

I had to have the second glucose test because my results were boarderline, it turned out that I did not have gestational diabetes. Good Luck tomorrow!! The best part about not being pregnant anymore (beside having my lo in my arms) is not getting stuck with needles all the time. I am not generally a run to the doctor kinda gal so being pregnant and having all those tests really got to me. Hope everything turns out well!!

I had both tests with by 2nd baby and my first baby was huge, which indicated a large possibility of GD. My 2nd test was negative.
There is a large number of false positives with the screening test. That's why it's called a screening test. Most likely, your confirmation test will come back negative, but if it doesn't, it is something you want to know. High sugar levels can harm you and affect the baby.

Thanks... I'm hopeful that its nothing. If it does turn out to be something then I'll do what I have to do. It caught me off guard more then anything.

| My Dad is a diabetic (though controlled by diet only), so I had to have the 2hr test from the get-go. I wound up having GD. Here's what I went through, just to prepare any of you who wind up with it. It's not really THAT bad. I was sent to the diabetes clinic at the local hospital for training on how to manage it. I met with a nutritionist who provided a diet for me to follow. Basically, I had to limit the carbs at each meal/snack. And I HAD to eat three meals and three snacks a day - even if I didn't want a snack. I think I had 15-45gm carbs/snack and 45gm carbs/meal. They gave me a very detailed package the outlined the nubmer of carbs/food item, practically everything was in there. I also had to test myself when I woke up and I think a half hour after every meal/snack (can't remember the time) and pee on a stick every morning. Because my levels were quite high first thing in the morning, I had to go on a small dose of insulin at night. I was freaked by this, but it is super easy to administer. No syringe in sight, just something that looked like a fancy pen with the insulin cartridge in it. Just dial the units and stick it in the leg, pretty painless and easy. BUT.... there were people who were able to control it just with diet alone, so don't worry about having to use insulin. I also had to go for non-stress tests at the hospital once a week when I hit 30-ish weeks (can't exactly remember) to monitor Connor's heart. In any event, it took some getting used to (and Christmas was HARD with all the baked goodies around), but once I did, it wasn't too bad. And... I had a healthy baby. I took the glucose test 4 months after Connor was born and I do not have diabetes now. Hope this helps out. But, hope that you guys don't have it!
