I'm having an outdoor, lunch-time picnic-type reception and I don't know what food to serve. We'll likely have sort of a buffet-style layout. Fruit salad is a must and my fiance was hoping to have gaspacho as well. Does anyone have any good ideas for inexpensive lunches?

That's a cute idea (picnic style). I think going full out woud be awesome (see picture below - I saw this somewhere and thought it was so sweet).

If you pack little picnic baskets I think you should include sandwiches (posh ones like smoked salmon and cream cheese, ham and cucumber, etc). Think high tea!

I loooovvve Gazpacho soup though I know my family arn't keen on the idea of "cold soup". I've seen Gazpacho done in a shooter glass as a little h'or d'oeurve before a main meal. Perhaps you could do that if you think it might polarize amongst your guests?

If I were doing a picnic/lunch reception I'd definitely be thinking of an Afternoon Tea theme. If you look up Afternoon Tea at the big hotels in London (England) you might get some ideas?

Even if you do buffet style I still think you could do Afternoon/High Tea theme and buy or rent the tiered sandwich platters - very cute and very classy!

Thanks for the ideas! I love the high tea theme. I am planning on serving tea and coffee with cookies and cupcakes as opposed to a wedding cake.

Just a thought...is Gazpacho too spicy for an afternoon tea/lunch? Should I just stick to sandwiches, or have a different type of soup? Is this a nit-picky detail or will it actually throw people off (make some people sick from the switch from spicy to sweet; leave a weird taste in their mouths; glaringly not go with everything else)

Try other types of gazpacho. We're having a watermelon/basil gazpacho at our summer outdoor wedding next July, as part of the plated appetizer portion of the meal. We're serving it with a mixed greens salad. It was originally suggested to us as a vodka-spiked watermelon gazpacho served with a vanilla marinated shrimp but I'm opting out of the vodka so that more people can enjoy it.

Gazpacho doesn't need to be spicy. In fact I actually can't recall ever having a spicy one. It's very easy to make (I make it all the time). I always add cucumber to my gazpacho which gives it that fresh taste - would go perfectly with sandwiches.
