I had huge problems with Birks when we bought DH's band.  The ring was not ordered when it was supposed to have been (there was a problem and no one contacted me over a 4 week period to let me know).  And there were many lies from the store manager about trying to contact me (uh, we have caller id, and voice mail - there were no calls EVER).  It took over 3 months for the ring to come in - we only decided to keep the purchase with them because they were the only ones who carried the design DH liked...  I will never set foot in their stores again. And this was in Calgary...

Good Luck with the issue. It's pretty horrible that they keep jerking you around like this. Keep us updated!

They actually just called here looking for FH but he's sleeping, he's working nights right now, so I think they can wait.  Unless they're going to tell him that he's getting money and stuff back, I don't need to wake him up for news that will make him grumpy!  I'll post later if it was anything exciting, they're probably just making sure we're still going for another appraisal.  blah.

Well I think everything is settled now.  We went to the third appraisal and the number that came back satisfied FH.  I don't think he was worried so much that he over paid but that we wouldn't be able to insure the ring for what he paid.  I dont' know, I still only have an educated guess as to how much it all was.  We've decided I am keeping the ring and he said he doesn't care if I go back and pick my wedding band from there as well but we're very open to looking around!

About a week ago I gave up stressing about it all and now I'm done.  No more phone calls and stress.  This weekend we're going to check out the venue where I want the reception to be so let's bring on some other new and exciting issue haha

Thanks ladies for all the advice and info!

Hi, not to rain onn your parade b/c I know you are happy the situtaion is over...keep in mind that Birks sent you to THEIR appraisers so they work for Birks so they may be telling you what Birks wants you to hear b/c what company wants to give back $4000.00?

I too don't mean to rain on your parade, but I just want to, well.. give a little info I suppose. When you insure a ring, you are paying premiums on the VALUE you declare on the ring. What happens when/if something happens to the ring is, you are expected to go out and purchase a ring of the SAME specifications - not necessarily the same very ring. So, for arguments sake, say you have a 1.00 VVS1 F colour round, and you insure it for $10000 (just making up numbers here ok) because that is what you paid. But, if you go around to other jewellers/retailers and you can find a diamond of the same specs for $6000, then you are paying higher insurance for nothing, AND you are only going to get $6000 back to replace your ring.

Point is - do a little more research. And unfortunatly, yes, my guess is that Birks appraised it for what they think it is worth because it is a "Birks" brand name ring. But, it's all subjective - diamonds are worth what you want it to be worth. So, if you love it, keep it. You wanted a Birks ring, and if that's what you love it should be worth it to you. Just be wary of the insurance - make sure that if you are paying the premiums, you will get YOUR ring back (AKA the Birks) not just any ring!

Roo Hoo here...

Hey everyone, I don't want to offend anyone or anything, but I am very aware that top dollar was spent on the ring because of where it was from.  I realize that with them sending us to their appraisers we were probably being told what we wanted to hear, but that's all we wanted.  We just wanted numbers to match for insurance prices.

PP, we totally made sure that the ring has to be the same.  One of the ladies that I spoke to actually showed me where it was in writing that if it was lost/stolen/whatever then it had to be replaced with the exact same thing from Birks...although I'm sure the store would always accept us paying for a small upgrade   Everytime you go in they're like, oh you know, in a year you can upgrade your diamond blah blah blah.  It's like thanks ladies, I didn't quite catch that the last five times you told me hehe

I actually wish it was even bigger somedays, apparently the creepers on my bus don't seem to notice it and feel the need to talk to me ahhhh People!  That is not my "holy smokes I'm so glad I'm riding the bus I wish every creepy guy on here would talk to me" face that you see everyday.  That is my "leave me alone you freak, can't you see I'm taken?!"  Ohhhhh public transit, how freaking fun lol

To anyone who's reading this, it's Wednesday!  The week is slowly coming to an end! wahoo!
