we've got a really strict budget, and we have a high-interest savings account...we've gone over budget on a few small things but most have been kept within our means. being in debt is not an option.

things we've done to save money:

-having a friend DJ (he is charging us less than his regular amount)

-having a relatively inexpensive honeymoon (san francisco)

-going with the free (and lovely) centrepieces the venue provides

-having friends do our invitations (as a wedding gift)

-hiring a photographer and florist who is just starting out, but doing AMAZING work

-friday night wedding

-closing the bar at 12 but staying until 1 (they said people can grab a few drinks right before the bar closes if they want to)

-DIYing whatever we can (ring pillow, flower girl pomanders, favour boxes, moneybox, guestbook, etc)

-wearing non-traditional dresses (hers is a party dress, mine's a bridesmaid dress)

FH and I want a wonderful wedding, but don't want to spend any more than we have to, so we've decided to do without the honeymoon.  We're going to save-up and go on a nice "honeymoon" vacation maybe sometime in the next couple of years after our wedding.

Maybe you could do without the honeymoon alltogether, or postpone it?  It would be another $2K in your pocket, and maybe your father would gift you the rest toward wedding expenses.

Best of luck!

Also, a Stag & Doe is a great fund-raiser.

Can you believe we are only spending approx. $16,000 for our 110 guests wedding, open bar, flowers, photographer, dj, dress and tux, a miscellaneous expenses.  But get this, our honeymoon is approx. $10,000.  Going to Italy for 16 days.  And EVERYTHING is being paid off just before the wedding.

So if you really want to pay things off, you'll find ways to save.  My only advice, is you have to shop around for the best deal possible. And to KEEP IT SIMPLE.

For about 110 people, north of Toronto, including the honeymoon, we are at about 25K.  The honeymoon alone is about 8K.  We both have credit lines that we will pay off afterwards, and some little things I have put on credit card.  I try not to think about it alot...I am always told how generous people are at weddings...being a gift or helping out another way.

We have the opposite in our case...I'm the one who's relaxed with the money situation (I'll be paying for most of the wedding and have put in place a pretty good savings plan; we're having him focus on paying off his debt instead of contributing to the wedding fund) and the FH is the one freaking out...to the point that he REFUSES to start planning the wedding until "we" have "enough money".  According to his way of thinking, with the wedding taking place in April 2008, we won't be able to start booking things until January 2008 (the estimated date when I'll have our full wedding budget saved)...how does he expect me to pull that one off?
