The place has VERY good ratings/reputation/reviews. It is RIGHT in Hollywood.

RE: Anyone been/going to California/Hollywood/L.A.?

Southern California is beautiful and Santa Barbara which is about 90 min. driving from LA or about 2-3 hours by train is a stunning locale, and very romantic. Connecting flights from LAX fly into and out of SB every day. It is an open air airport - very nice.

There is a beautiful huge pier in this town, that you could walk for at least half a day, with restaurants, bars, shops, look out points, etc. - and tons to look at and take pics of. It's just beautiful. I stayed at Fess Parker's Doubletree resort when i was there last at a conference. I am sure there are tons of other accommodation options but the resort was nice - it was very pretty albeit in a more isolated part of town, but SB is not all that huge, so it was fine. My room was huge and had a king size bed, plus sitting area and a beautiful balcony with a STUNNING view of the mountains and the beautiful tropical palms and bougeanvillea all around. The sky is a blue you would never see here and the contrast between the greenery and the sky is just STUNNING - I can't tell you how stunning - you have to see it for yourself. I was there in September 2005 and the weather was about 30-35C every day. Nights were cool and breezy. The ocean was COLD though. There is GREAT food in SB (especially if you love Mexican like I do - you can't get good Mexican in Canada like you can here or in Mexico), and lots of sights plus great shopping. I highly recommend it.

You can stay in SB for a few days and then take the train (it's called the surf and sea or something) into LA where you get a GREAT view the whole way there - riding between the mountains and the ocean and stay there for a few days.

In LA, nice areas to see are Hollywood obviously, the Hollywood Hills, Sunset Blvd, Beverly Hills, Venice Beach, Santa Monica, etc. - LA is HUGEEEEEEEEEEEE and you really need a good few days to see a bit of everything if not more. I went to a GREAT nightclub in Hollywood if you're into clubs, called LOTUS or WHITE LOTUS (can't remember now - was about 5 years ago). It was very classy, great drinks, music, crowd, and decor. It's a japanese restaurant on one side and a nightclub on the other. If it's still there, good to know - we needed pre-booked reservations on guest list to get in. Just call ahead to ask for guest list to any club - if they are open to the public they'll usually put you on.

Another great locale on other coast is Miami. Great shopping there but I prefer California myself. Depends what you're looking for. :)

DEFINITELY check out Santa Barbara. You won't regret it.

RE: Anyone been/going to California/Hollywood/L.A.?

we're going to california but not LA - we're going to san francisco. so i don't have any suggestions for you as far as places to stay. but one thing that we are doing based on other peoples suggestions is renting a car one day and driving south to some of the beaches and state reserves, because they are apparently GORGEOUS with lots of sealife and hiking trails and everything. so for us it's great, we get the honeymoon in the city (we're urban people) and we also get a bit of sun and nature too. :) so you may want to see if there are any state reserves/parks within day trip distance to where you'll be staying.

RE: Anyone been/going to California/Hollywood/L.A.?

You should try out tripadvisor.com. Yes, another forum, but it really is so helpful. Just click the city you want and there is a huge message board waiting for you.

We planned both our trips to NYC and our upcoming trip to Las Vegas from the message board. There are tonnes of reviews and tonnes of info.

hope that helps.

RE: Anyone been/going to California/Hollywood/L.A.?

thats too bad you're not getting many suggestions.
