They are great because you have a staff member of the cruise line meet you at a particular place and they take you around and they know exactly where to go. We will definitely be booking shore excursions but not at every port. Places like Rome, Tunisia (carthage), Barcelona, Florence we will definitely explore through the execursions, but Palma de Mallorca,Monte Carlo, and a couple of other smaller ports we decided we would explore on our own. I looked into the price of the excursions and they run anyhere from $30pp to $150pp. The website of the cruise company you booked with will have descriptions/prices of various excursions offered at each port. SOme popular tourist spots in Europe are not all close to the port, in fact, it's probably likely that they aren't. I would recommend you look at the shore excursions and pick at least a few... I mean, do you really want to hang out by the pier and walk around when you could hop on a bus and do a city tour of Rome for example???
