(1) September is hurricane season (2) it's much more fun to go south and not have to still go through winter when you come back (3) it gives us something else to look forward to AFTER the wedding is all said and done (4) we'll take a mini-moon in the Maritimes (we live in NB and getting married in NS) so maybe we'll spend a few days in Halifax or something before heading home so we still get the "right after the wedding bliss" but still get our tropical vacation!!
I think the mini-moon is a great idea!! Partly because I just like the name you gave it.. lol You also raise a good point about going after winter. I went to Key West for new years last year and got back here and it was MISERABLE.. lol.. have you booked it yet/ decided where you are going?

RE: September Honeymoon help

We got married Sept 29/07 and left for our honeymoon Oct 7. We went to Sandals Grande St. Luica. The weather the perfect, the resort was only 40% full. We are going to Jamaica in the middle of September and are keeping our fingers crossed, but at least we have comfort knowing that if a hurricane does come into the area before or during, we will be compensated either financially or by getting another stay within one year. The hotel we chose is Couples Swept Away in Negril. So excited : )

RE: September Honeymoon help

We were married Sept. 1st/07 and we left for Mayan Riviera, Mexico on Sept. 8th and we had fantastic weather the enitre week! And we paid less than 2500 because of the season - we might have gotten a better price if we waited until last minute - but the resort we booked was amazing and we didnt want to wait.

It was the Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda - Fantastic Resort and it was only at about 35% of its capacity while we were there (again because of the season) So we had fantastic service, food and just an all around great experience!

RE: September Honeymoon help

Hey I too am getting married to an ACCOUNTANT! We are getting married on September 20, 2008, we are going to Jamaica, Negril, Sandals we were able to get a great price, honeymoon suite ocean view, and flights and it is all inclusive less than 5K....

My guy was worried about hurricaine season but they have a great guarantee which is why we chose Sandals, and my planner used to work for them and she had nothing but awesome things to say about them and she has been during the same time of year, nothing has hit yet but it rains for an hour every other day and that it is so hot that you will welcome the rain.....

Lily

RE: September Honeymoon help

We are going to a new (not even open yet) resort, Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun. It's right on the west coast of Mexico, about 45 minutes from Cancun, 20 from playa del carmen... for 7 nights + flights, it was just under 4500. However that will not include the extra stuff, like deep sea fishing, which is a must for us.
The fact is, September does fall into hurricane weather, so I am expecting some rain regardless, maybe even a crappy storm. Usually they come in quick, short, heavy downpours so your whole day doesn't get ruined, BUT on the plus side, there's nothing wrong with a little alone time in the room :) The nice thing about hurricanes is that they CAN see them coming - for the most part, they move slow, especially the bad ones - so you should have time to prepare (either not go or get out of there) So suppose worst case scenarios:

a) You find out your resort is getting hit by a hurricane before you leave

b) You find out during your stay they are expecting a hurricane (have family keep an eye on the weather and know how to contact you to give you the heads up)

We paid the extra for the travel insurance so if something happens (natural disaster/flight cancelled) we are fully covered to get our money back. I would strongly recommend it (plus you know if you DIDN'T get it, that's when something bad is going to happen.. lol)
**edited to add** Here's a list of the best beaches according to Travel Channel; they split it into seasons too so that's pretty helpful (maroma beach is there, but not listed in sept.. lol)
http://www.travelchannel.com/Travel_Ideas/Best_Beaches/ci.Beach_Guide_Best_Time.beach?vgnextfmt=beach

RE: September Honeymoon help

I'm a September bride facing this exact same problem. We're looking at our budget currently now and where we want to go. Someone recommended looking into cruising because the boat can navigate around the storms and hurricanes. There is also the West Coast side of Mexico that has all inclusive resorts. I have also been told the Cook Islands are nice that time of year.

RE: September Honeymoon help

I am in the same boat, and my TA suggested Aruba... It is a little lower south then Domican and Cuba but they Aruba doesn't get the Hurricanes. You could look into that.

RE: September Honeymoon help

all inclusive is what Brian would like. the question is where when it's the middle of Septmeber. I would be so unhappy if it rained the entire time. And Brian would rather not go to a travel agent and then have to pay them. he's too cheap for that..

RE: September Honeymoon help
JacSpeers (4/28/2008)
Brian hans't given us a sepcific budget, but nothing over $6,000. We are getting married in October and considering the Grand Canyon (well our other thought is a Meditteranian cruise - we are totally all over the place on this).

RE: September Honeymoon help

What is your budget??

RE: September Honeymoon help

I'd suggest you set a budget & then go to a travel agent with that budget. They're pretty good about ideas & suggestions. My DH's cousin ended up at the Mayan Rivera based on a TA's advice b/c it was cheaper & they loved it.

In terms of avoiding hurricanes, would you consider staying in Canada? You could do some pretty great honeymoons in Niagara Falls, Quebec City, Vancouver, Banff, etc

September Honeymoon help

The last big thing needed for my wedding planning is a honeymoon. Here's the issue.
My fiance is an accountant:unsure:, and not cheap per say, but more then fiscally responsible. So I need ideas for honeymoons that aren't going to kill our budget (Brian's God).

Because it's September we have the issue of hurricane season and rainy season in other places.

Help!! I need great spots for not so much money.

Thanks!!!
