Shmez is married

We got married in Jamaica on April 25, 2008. I've already posted some pics in the DW section for those who want to look at them.

Everything went perfectly, even if the wind was CRAZY!!!

We were at Silver Sands for 2 weeks and loved every minute of it!

I'll post a few pics here that I didn't post in the DW section... just cuz I can't choose which ones I like the most :P

So, we are back... and what a time we had. It was an amazing week, and an amazing day. I have lots to tell... we ended up having a tropical depressin so the wedding did not go as planned.... but ended up being even better then we could have hoped. My pics are on a DVD... and my computer doesn't let me use it... so i have scaned a few for now but will have to use a friends later....

reveiw to follow when i have gotten a few more hours sleep.

this is it for now. I have better shots to come... i am going to try and get the actual dvd pics working or saved on another disk that i can use... more to come. the new photographer is an amazing guy!!!

Did anyone break even

Hey all,

I know money shouldn't matter, but I am really curious

Prior to getting married, I would hear newlyweds say they broke even or made profit.

Based on our wedding and including all expenses....i mean all expenses that deal with the wedding, we only made half.

Do people mean that they break even for the reception/hall portion of the wedding because I find it difficult to believe that most people break even for the entire cost of the wedding.

As well, I must say all our guests gave generiously.

The way I see it, once the total cost surpassess a $100 bucks a person, it will be difficult to break even and I am including weddings that allow children.

Well I've stalled long enough! Finally I have gotten around to posting a review.
As usual it is very long and detailed with many pics..... so stick around only if you want to! :)

To start:

1. Attire

Brides By Tara: 10/10 www.bridesbytara.com
I purchased both my dress and veil through this Peterborough store. They have a fantastic selection, the store is gorgeous, and the owner Tara is young hip and fun! Service was timely and helpful. Alterations were a breeze. I really can't say enough. My bridesmaids also ordered their dresses here.... and again very happy with the service.

Evening Dress: an impulse buy about a week before the wedding... I wanted something lighter for the reception dancing part..... I purchased the evening gown at Laura.... it was a fantastic deal at $180... see the cake cutting pics at the end to see a pic of the dress.

Shoes were comfortable all night.... only a 2.5 inch heel so very easy to deal with.... I got many compliments on the shoes

Jewelry - various vendors
I got some jewelry at private boutiques and some items from ebay.

Tuxes - Syd Silver 10/10
My husband chose Syd Silver and was very happy with the customer service he and his groomsmen received there. They were very professional and the end product looked great on all the men. No hiccups!

2. Hair and Make-up: Sarah and Leah 10/10!

I had some issues in finding a hair and makeup artist but thankfully found Sarah and Leah, a sister team, a few weeks before the wedding. They did a fantastic job, the hair and makeup stayed on all night. Sarah did everyone's hair and Leah did all the makeup. The prices were very reasonable and the service was impeccable!!! I can't rave about them enough.

3. Rings: Dana's Goldsmithing in Port Perry 8/10
My husband designed my engagement ring at Dana's and of course it was gorgeous so we decided to also go back to Dana's to design our bands. We are thrilled with the end result.... and love our rings! The only reason I assessed them as an 8/10 was because the creation of my band took much longer than we originally anticipated and I had to drive back and forth to Port Perry at least 5 different times. My band was more intricate and delicate and getting the diamonds set right took quite a few tries ( they are princess cut stones set on an angle)

4. Photography - Christina Charlesworth 10/10

I found Christina as my photographer and could not have been happier. Her work is fantastic and her packages are reasonably priced. Furthermore Christina is very easy to work with and makes photo sessions a breeze. We also did our engagement shoot with Christina.

5. Coordination and Floral: La Fete 11/10
Minh from La Fete was fabulous!! www.lafete.ca
I originally found Minh on a wedding planning board while I was looking for a florist. I could not have been happier with Minh's work! The guests were in awe of the floral masterpieces that Minh created...... all on a more than reasonable budget!!! Minh did all the flowers for the bridal party, the centrepieces, church arrangments, pew decor, and as my coordinator she also decorated the entire church before the ceremony and did final touch ups at the hall prior to our arrival.

She also ended up being my day-of coordinator and I cannot stress how invaluable she was at the wedding! We had several meetings before the wedding and Minh took care of all the details on the big day. She was there from the morning until the last piece of decor was taken down at the hall! She's a very talented girl and a pleasure to work with!

We weren't originally sold on videography but then I saw Konrad at a friend's wedding and we were convinced. We were more than thrilled with the enthusiasm and professionalism that Konrad exhibited on both the wedding day and even the rehearsal night. Konrad has a very unique style, and is really dedicated to his work. We absolutely loved everything!!! The highlights were so beautiful and moving, but the final DVD is awesome and really shows off the entire day, just as we remember it. It really is a priceless memory and I'm so glad that we decided to hire Konrad. I wanted someone who cared about making a great video (and memory) for me and my husband, and that is exactly what we got, but with artistic flair! We couldn't be more happy with the end result!!!

7. Decor - Debbie Grimbos at Creations Decor 10/10

I was speechless when I first walked into our beautifully decorated hall and reception area. Debbie went above and beyond creating an atmosphere that was simple yet very elegant. Debbie decorated the receiving tables, cake table, head table, and back drop. She provided all the chair covers as well as table linens. Here is some pictures of her magnificent work. The guests were in awe of the decor!!!

8. Pianist: Carol Gibson 10/10
We originally wanted a pianist for the ceremony and so we found Carol, however we liked her so much that we also asked her to play during the cocktail hour at the hall. Carol did an excellent job, and all the guests raved about how talented she was. If you would like more information about Carol please pm me.

9. Cakes: Jean Courneyea 10/10
I had a really hard time finding a cake that I liked, and approached my MOH's mom about 4 weeks before the wedding to see if she would create my vision! Luckily she agreed to do it! The cakes were gorgeous, were just what we wanted, and of course delicious to boot! Jean is from the Peterborough area so if anyone is interested please pm me for more details.

10. Banquet Hall - Le Parc Thornhill, www.leparc.ca 10/10
We searched for a few months to find the perfect location and I think we managed to do that! Working with Mario at Le Parc was a pleasure. We could not have been more please with both the level of service and the quality of food that the hall provided. The guests raved on and on about the food as well as the calibre of service provided by this banquet hall. During the reception Mario came by personally on two occasions to make sure that things were running smoothly and that we were happy with the service.
We picked halls 5 and 6 because they were seperate from all the other halls and therefore my wedding guests were the only ones to use the bathrooms, lobby and reception area in addition to the dining room and bars.
Food 10/10
Staff 10/10
Service 10/10
Appearance 10/10

11. DJ - Skip a Beat Entertainment, Dennis 10/10 www.skipabeat.ca

We had a few meetings with both the owner Brad and our DJ Dennis. Dennis was very easy to work with, fun, outgoing, and knows how to feel out the crowd. The guests were dancing all night! Dennis even incorporated a few chosen polish songs which were submitted by us.

12. Limo - 123 Limo No rating assigned www.123limo.ca
The only thing I can say about this vendor at this time is that they were on time for the pick up at my house.

13. Photography Location: Markham Museum 10/10
We were thrilled, as was our photographer, with the museum! There is a permit cost ($180) however it is well worth it. We were the only group at the museum and has access to most of the exhibits and locations. Fall is a beautiful time and the weather actually cooperated with us! 14. Miscallaneous items - completed by bride and groom! :)

We ended up doing our own invitations, church programs, menus, seating chart, favours, bathroom baskets, signing mats etc.
Here are a few pics!
Invitations: We purchased our own paper from www.envelopemall.com The only downside is that they will charge the UPS brokerage fee which was like $30-40, but in the end the paper was still worth it.... It was stardream metallic in opal and bronze, which I later used for thank you cards, and other wedding related programs/signs etc. Sorry the pics are so blurry......

Seating Tree: Made from dogwood, guest names arranged by table number and hung on the tree! People loved it!

Signing Mats: Frames purchased from Kitchen Stuff Plus, $15-20 each... hold an 8x10, or 11x14. We used the engagement pics done by our photographer and created 2 signing mats for our guests to sign.

How long did it take to do your hair and make-up?

I just came back from a wedding where it took 3 hours to do the bride, 3 bridesmaids, and the mother of the bride... and even then they didn't get one of the bridesmaid's make-up finished!!

I have my mother and bridesmaid booked in for hair at 10:30, and myself for hair and make-up at 11:00am. The wedding is at 2:30, but is an hour's drive away. Do you think this will be enough time?

How long did it take your wedding party to get ready? And how many were in your wedding party?

OK, so i have heard that you need to order a certificate to change your name. I have heard I can use the one from my marriage commissionaire.

What is right or wrong? Please let me know, I have to drive three hours to change my name at places and want to have the right forms when I go.

Hey all, wow, it's been ages since I came on here, but since this is where I started out, grabbing ideas from this one and that one, I thought to share some pics of our special day...we had a great day, Oct 6th, Thanksgiving weekend. Many of our friends and family traveled from Newfoundland to be with us and we were so appreciative! The weather was gorgeous, it was so nice and warm. We couldn't have asked for a better day, so enjoy! We know we did :)

What Does It Feel Like The Night Before Your Wedding? (and for that matter, the morning of?)

For those of you who have recently had your big day - what did it feel like the night before? Were you calm? anxious? excited? nervous? And when you woke up in the morning about to embark on the biggest day of your life (at least it will be for me!!) - What was that like?? were you bouncing off the walls with excitement? Did you take it all in? Can you share some insight?

I try to picture the day in my head, but it all seems like a huge dream to me still! It's like the one thing I wanted most in the whole world is about to happen....and the suspense is killing me! lol.... I am so in love with my FH and he is truly the man I've always hoped and wished for. I feel so lucky to be marrying him, and I just can't believe it's really happening!! (Excited much?) :laugh:

But tell me - What was it like for you??!!

How to calm your nerves before walking down the isle?

I'm a complete freak when it comes to having all eyes on me, talking if front of people, and ultimately, walking down the isle. This was the whole reason we had to change our wedding to a DW because I knew less people would attend ( I know, it's horrible but thank goodness my FH is very understanding)

I'm anticipating being too nervous to even make it down the isle or passing out before I get there. Did any of you ever experience this or were you presently surprised that you weren't as nervous as you thought you would be?

What did you ladies do, who have already taken the walk down the isle, do to calm your nerves? I NEED HELP!

i realized i never did a wedding review so i thought i'd throw one together :) sorry it's late...can i blame newlywed brain still?

Ceremony & Reception - The Academy of Spherical Arts - Samuel May Room - 9/10 - http://www.sphericalarts.com/

The venue was BEAUTIFUL and the food outstanding! the only reason i knocked them down a point is because their drinks were too expensive. they KILLED my booze budget before we even got back from pictures! we had put a cap on what price drinks we would pay for and i think they were giving out more expensive drinks (this is a place with $300/shot scotch!) and then just charging how many drinks it would be worth. we asked to see the tab and she said there wasn't anything on it we didn't approve but we went through the amount WAY too quickly and some of our guests told us they saw people getting more expensive drinks; of course - that doesn't mean they didn't pay for them themselves so we let it be since we were so satisfied with everything else.

Otherwise, the food was fabulous! The staff were so wonderful - and we have family members that WE don't even like! :D We had several weird allergies (tomatos, mangos, mushrooms) and they not only accomidated them all, they made us little signs for all the dishes (we had buffet) to make sure everyone knew what was in each dish.

I dealt with Aleasha, one of their two coordinators. She was wonderful. Organized, helpful and honest - when something wasn't working she called us on it and helped us to solve the problem. I'm a stage manager so i tend to overplan things and she was one of the only people i dealt with throughout the entire wedding process who didn't give me attitude for asking too many "what ifs" and in fact, she thought up a few for me! I had recommended the venue after the wedding to a friend and they dealt with someone else (i don't know who) and they didn't like the person at all.

They took care of all the setup and decorating and i just sent ben about an hour before the ceremony to check everything was as i planned it.

Because of our setup - they had to flip the stage twice and i never saw it happen. they were efficient and fast and even took it upon themselves to move decorations to more appropriate places as the setting changed. all of our guests are still talking about how much fun it was having the pool tables out and it was a great way for people to mingle and get to know each other.

i highly recommend this venue!

Photographer - Justin Demers - 10/10

What can i say? I know i'm biased, but i've never seen such beautiful wedding pics. :blush: i work at a photo studio and i still get random requests from people saying they want to see my pics again because they need inspiration for something they're working on. my slideshow has been seen in places like BC, (i'm in toronto), new york, floridia....people are sending it everywhere! i've had clients and executives ask for it! Justin did an amazing job! and he had his work cut out for him! me and ben are VERY uncomfortable in front of the camera. Justin and his assitant/fiance Michelle felt like old friends - they are not only great talents - they are lovely people. i never plan on using any one else again ever! :D well, maybe not EVER...but you know....

Florist - Pink Twig - 8/10

Pink Twig is a couple of funky young girls just starting out in the flower business - they've had their store about a year or 2. they worked with me to create beautiful flowers within my budget and they were very creative and kind. i took one point away because i feel like some of their prices were ridiculous and they weren't flexible about cutting a deal - but in thier defense, even though they wouldn't cut prices, they certainly didn't cut quality. they made sure i loved what i got. they also were open to my nutty ideas and didn't laugh at me when i told them hydrangeas make me angry and try to convince me otherwise - like every other florist.

i took a second point away because i did attitude when i tried to change something a little late in the game - but again, they at least suggested solutions instead of just saying no. i've gotten a cut bouquet from there since the wedding for an avid flower lover and she was in shock at the quality of the flowers - she said they survived for almost a month!

Cake -The Wedding Cake Shoppe - 8/10

My cake was yummy beyond belief and beautiful. i docked her a couple of points because the cake wasn't completely what we agreed on...i had won the cake in a contest and i feel like she cut some corners because it was free. however - the taste was fabulous and i really enjoyed working with her. she was difficult to get a hold of sometimes and has a lot of email issues - which sucks for me because i was doing everything through email from work - so that got frustrating; but she was so nice whenever i was able to get ahold of her that i couldn't stay mad. :D

Hair - Melanie from Hair 2 - 10/10

Mel was AMAZING. Hair 2 as a company is no longer in commision, she's gone out on her own now....so i'll have to get her current contact info and add it here later. she came to the hotel and didn't even charge me extra! (i've been a client of hers for a number of years) she came to just do my hair and my mom's and ben's mom and at the last minute fit in my bm and sister! she didn't complain about a thing! she got everyone finished in oodles of time and still stuck around to help us with our fake lashes! :D she is a cool chick and a wicked hair dresser.

Wedding Dress & Veil - Ritche 6/10

i got my dress at the ritche sale and boy oh boy did they ever let me know it. apparently i had to get my alterations done by may (!) - which is fabulous when you have a september wedding :doze: it's even better when you find that out in may when you're innocently calling for your first appointment. when i went for my second fitting - which was supposed to be my last fitting - i discovered that they had taken in my dress about 4 sizes to small...the zipper was about 5-6 inches away from each other at the top. :crying: fortunately for me - my mom went to school for fashion design so they couldn't pull any fast ones over on us...she made them fix it and i ended up having about 10 fittings because of the screw up. unfortunately for me - my mom can also be "difficult" when unhappy....so from that moment in all the ladies that worked there hated me. :( i was given a lot of attitude. i will say that they fixed my dress and that it fit great by the big day...but there was a LOT of tears and unnecessary stress because of this place. i won't say i don't recommend them, because my dress was a good price and they did eventually do a great job - but i would definately not expect a huggy feely environment. go in, get your dress done and get out.

BM Dresses - Netbride - 9/10

if i had known how easy netbride would be i would never have walked into a store! lol! the only reason i docked a point is because their sizing charts were kind of confusing. the dresses were not only on time - they were early! they fit nearly perfectly - my girls didn't even get alterations! they just used the straps instead of making it strapless so that they didn't have to get any alterations! i highly recommend it!

Tuxes - Syd Silver - 4/10

i HATED dealing with syd silver. the tuxes we got were beautiful BUT they were a ***ing nightmare to deal with. we had one man in kingston, one in guelph, two in pickering and two in toronto. not a single store knew what the *** they were doing. NOT EVEN CLOSE. i had to call their head office nearly everyday and scream at them! i finally found one guy that sympathize with me and he took my order on and made everything right again. every store apparently has their own order numbers and inventory numbers and no central computer tracking system - even their head office couldn't figure out what they were having issues with! the only way i would ever deal with this place again is if all the men were in one place and could all go into one store at the same time and pick their stuff up immediately - like the head office.

Engagement Ring, Wedding Rings - Paul Randolph Jewellers - Kingston - 10/10

This is a family owned company in kingston that does outstanding custom and high end jewellery. their quality is fantastic and the owner is one of our groomsman! :D his grandfather started the business and it's a kingston standard :)

Those seem to be the big ones people look for, so i'll just list the others - if you want more info on anything just ask! :)

Shoes - Becker's Bridal - just walked in and bought them...so not much to say there....

DJ - Friend of the Family - so she's cool.... :D

Invitations - me and hubby, supplies from Michaels

Wedding Jewellery - me, antique market, and my grandma

Name change with spanish marriage certificate (Ontario)

Hello everyone,

First of all, congratulations to all the newlyweds out there! My question is more for the people who had a destination wedding. I got married in Cuba and just received my marriage certificate with the Canadian consulates stamp on it. I had previously had a Cuban temporary certificate, but because it was in spanish, the one driver's license bureau would not change my name with it.

Now that I have another one with the Canadian consulate's "seal of approval" on it, will they accept it even though it's in spanish? Do I need to get it translated? I'm lost at this point because I don't know what to do if I can't use it. If anyone lives in Ontario and has gone through this or successfully changed their name, can you please give me some insight? Thank you so much for any help you can provide.

I looked at Walmart, Superstore, Snapfish etc. but I'm just not loving what I see.

Name change process-Ontario

Our one year anniversary is coming up next month and I'm finally getting around to changing my name. To make a long story short, the gov't "misplaced" our marriage registration and so we only just got our Marriage Certificate in late Oct.
We went away on a cruise at Christmas so all of my travel documents were in my maiden name, and it would have cost me to change them all & hope that my new passport came in before we left.
Soooo...it brings me to January and I don't know where to begin. I'm assuming I would start with my license and/or passport, then banking info. credit cards, etc. I just don't want any problems with the bank with my automatic deposit, etc.
Any tips for how I can make this a smooth process would be great! Also, what kind of charges am I looking at?

Walking dow aisle with both parents

For those ladies who were walked down the aisle by 2 people, how did you do it?

Did you hold hands with them and if so, what did you do with your flowers?

Did they each hold onto your arms? If so, was there any trouble with everyone walking the same pace?

I'm trying to picture how it will look walking with both mom & dad. I want to carry flowers but i like the idea of holding hands with them too.

Any suggestions or photos you could share?

Lol funny but true!!

MIL Advice Required

Hi All,

I have recently had a little incident with my MIL and it has really upset me and I would like some insight from all of you newlyweds as to how you would have reacted....

A little backgroud, my MIL get along fairly; however, I have always had the sense that I wasn't truly part of the family. She is fairly attached to my DH and we have had several issues with her in planning the wedding, etc. Fast forward to last weekend where we were visiting her and I noticed that she had ordered some of our wedding pictures from our photographer. She ordered 3 different family pictures and one of them was a picture of her, my FIL, my BIL and my DH --- but without me in it!!! I was caught off guard and slightly hurt because I couldn't understand why she would have ordered a picture of her "family" without me in it on my wedding day!

I have spoken with her about because it was really bothering me and she acted as if it was no big deal and that I was in other pictures so it shouldn't bother me. But it does because it was our special day and signified me being part of their family and here is a picture without the bride.

Has this happened to any of you? How would you feel in this situation?

Assuming Your New Last Name

I've been looking up info on changing my name after the wedding. For assuming FH's name is it really as simple as just doing that? I don't have to file any papers with the ontario government?

1. Assuming a Spouse's or Partner´s Name

Assuming a name due to a relationship is the most common practice in Canada.

Once you are married, you may apply to change all your identification (health card, drivers licence, passport and banking information etc.) with your marriage certificate. You may assume your spouse’s/partner’s last name (surname) or a combination of your last name and your spouse’s/partner’s last name (hyphenated surname). It is really that simple.

The benefit of not completing a legal name change, is that it does not change the name on your birth certificate.

If you wish to use your legal name again, you simply revert back by presenting your birth certificate as proof of your legal name.
