Hello Brides! My new husband (squeeee) and I are now back in California after two weeks in Toronto for the wedding and our mini-honeymoon at Blue Mountain. So many emotions and experiences, I'm still processing and still pretty blissed-out. I don't think I have my head wrapped around the wedding yet (at least not enough to write about it coherently), but I couldn't go so long without at least a few pictures (all taken by family, probably all a little blurry, but who cares :) ).

And to all the brides-to-be out there, I want to leave you with this - It's all worth it. I promise :)

Name change

I'm not a newlywed yet, but i'm trying to decide what to do with my last name. I want to keep my name and i want to take my FH's last name. So i'm torn, should i throw a hyphen in between the two and live with a ridiculously long last name or should i drop my name and take his? Anyone else have a hard time with this?

So...we are married! My overall thoughts are:

-it wasn't nearly surreal as I expected it to be. I was actually very present in the moment and it was wonderful.
-almost nothing went wrong, which shocked me. I feel like I was overprepared mentally for things to go wrong on the day (particularly because of everyone driving to the Kawarthas through the G20), but everything ended up pretty much perfect!
-"being married" feels different than I thought - I thought it would be 'life as usual' but we actually do feel different and special (and the name thing is really taking some getting used to).

I had a lot of anxiety and nervousness going into the wedding and honestly at points just wanted it to be over in the days leading up. I didn't at all think that it would be the best day of my life, as people say - but it really, really was. We had a pretty small wedding - 65 people or so - so it was our really close family and friends. It was really overwhelmingly amazing to have everyone all together, AND we all spent the weekend at the resort!

The first time I saw everyone was at the ceremony - and I was struck by the love and emotion on all of our friends' and family's faces. I really loved our ceremony - we put it together with our minister - and will cherish those memories. Having the photography done right after was SO fun, and a nice bumper between the ceremony and dinner. I had a moment where I felt a bit sick (total sugar/adrenaline crash) during the dinner, but it passed quickly. The speeches were earnest and funny and really perfect (I have never seen my dad happier/more emotional/prouder than he was that weekend) and the self-DJ'd dance was a ton of fun!

While it rained the next day, we all had a great time indoors playing board games. It cleared up in the afternoon and we were able to take some boat tours, and then have an outdoor barbecue and bonfire.

I have to say, it was a huge crash coming home - DH (ha!) and I were like "what do we do now??" It was kind of a shock to settle back into normal working life - we're just getting used to it now.

Anyway, here's what you're all after - pics!! I wanted to specifically mention that our photographer, Jennifer Cavagna (who frequents these boards!) was above and beyond amazing - she was a calming and entertaining presence on the day, and the images turned out even better than we had hoped (which is saying something, given how impressed we were with her portfolio). I was married on March 20, 2010 in front of friends and family. We used an officiant - who I won't name yet - and everything was great. Fast forward several months and me following up with Service Ontario to receive our marriage certificate and I'm told they have no record of our marriage.

They ask that I find out from our officiant the date the licence was sent in and how it was sent in (ie: regular mail, registered mail, in person, etc.).

So I followed up with my officiant last week and have heard nothing. I followed up again, and still haven't heard anything. I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt, but seriously?? I'm a little concerned. As much fun as it was, I don't have the money to do it all over again!!

Anyone have a similar problem or have any ideas?

I really want to do a TTD session, but i have one problem - my dress is huge. All the pictures i have seen on the internet and even on this forum are with beachy type of desses where the dress just flows on the pics. Anyone of you do it with a cinderella type of dress?

Marriage Certificate Question

So, I recieved our wedding certificate in the mail, looked it over and realized...it says that DH was born in Albania! LOL! Funny yes-but I am wondering how long it will take immigration to knock on my door! haha! Not the reason I'm posting tho...my question is, I was waiting for my certificate to come in the mail so that I could go ahead and change my documents reflecting my new assumed name. Do you think that I will be able to use this certificate even with the incorrect place of birth for my DH? I called the registrar's office and they told me that I had to fax in the copy and write the correction on a photo copy. When I asked them if I could use it to change my name, they had no idea...they couldnt even tell me if they would be re-ssuing a new certificate with a new certificate number...yeesh! What good are they! Anyone have any experience with this? If I cant use it, then I will have to wait another 8 weeks or so for the fixed one to come in. I just moved and am wanting to change my license etc at the same time. Right now everything is still in my old address...very frustrating! Any help would be appreciated!

By the way, DH was born in Alberta, so I guess ALBANIA is not that far off! LOL

1st Anniversary Gift

So in June will be our first anniversary, amazing how fast time flies!! And I am at a big of a road block for some gift ideas. I would like to do something with traditional paper. I do always make homemade cards for everything anyways but I want something else.

My original plan was to get tickets to a live play but the theater doesn't have what is coming up past the end of May out yet, so incase they don't have anything out or that DH would like to go to I'm thinking of a plan B. I was also thinking of a little rather local getaway to a B & B but I'm not totally in love with that idea.

If you have any suggestions PLEASE let me know!

Woohooo the day came and went and now I am a wife ! We spent the weekend in Niagara Falls and came home today with enough time left to pack for the honeymoon - Cancun for a week at the Secrets Maroma. Can you believe I did not take one picture of the wedding day?! I feel terrible but my camera is pretty big and once you see the dress I had to lug around you will understand lol In the meantime here are 2 pics our photographer put up on his site. I will be sure to do a proper update when I get home !

My April 24, 2010 wedding

We had a really simple day, no supper or dance. Wedding was 1 pm at our church, and a treats reception following in the church basement. It was an amazing day and wouldn't change a thing. We had met April 22 (Earth Day). The veil was his mother's in 1978, and the cups were compostable (made from corn). Nova Scotia tartan theme.

Just wanted to pop in and share a few pics!!! We were married on Tueday May 4th at 3:30 in the afternoon in Mexico! It was the most beautiful, special day of my life and went off without a hitch!! I'm busy buys back to work and we have our big reception this weekend with our family and friends! Just wanted to share a few teasers for all you lovers of wedding porn out there! Our colors worked out better than I had imagined!!! It was 97 that day-so dont mind the sweat! Once I get my prof pics he should be able to photo shop it out! LOL!

we had a fake cake and a slab cake to cut and serve-it was left at my moms-MOH went to get it before dinner!

my crinoline did not fit the day of-baby belly-so i ended up tripping on the inside layer of my dress, got caught on a guest chair and my veil fell off half way down the asile-my sis reattached it when i got to the front.

forgot my comfy shoes

it was snowing hard so not outside pics:(

alot of family(mine)didn't show-not even my grandparents or my moms only brother

ended up cleaning up afterwards

there was more but those were the ones i can really remember

After 16 months of planning my day has come and gone! It was the most perfect day I could ever have wished for and I don't regret anything about the day. Every moment was just perfect and when I walked down the aisle and looked up into my husbands face and saw the tears in his face and watched him mouth the word "Wow" I couldn't have felt any happier. We have lived together for 4 years now and so we opted to do something different to kind of enhance the excitement and feeling for the day so from the Saturday before the wedding I moved to my parents house and we didn't see each other for the entire week. I'm telling you walking down the aisle and seeing him for the first time in the week was an amazing feeling. We couldn't stop looking at each other and smiling at each other the entire length of the ceremony. He cried, I cried, everybody cried. It was such a touching ceremony and I would do it over and over again to marry my best friend and my soul mate.
After the ceremony we took some pictures at Allen Gardens and while it was beautiful I felt like it was a really cramped space but we worked it :).
Our reception was magnificent! We had the best time and the decor was amazing and the food was fantabulous and all my vendors were AMAZING!!!! My friends coined a word to describe our reception: Hyphy:it was hype, it was banging, it was off the chain. It rocked lol. I've never had so much fun in my entire life.
I will write out a vendor review once I have finished dealing with all my vendors (still waiting on pro pics and my video). So until then here are some non pro pics from my wedding ceremony and reception. Thanks for looking :)

My Nov 7th Wedding

I've tried twice now to post about my wedding, but both times after making a nice, long post, it's been deleted and I couldn't get it back.

So I've given up on writing a review of the day. All I'll say is 1) As other Nov. 7th brides can attest to, the weather was PERFECT!!! We had an outdoor ceremony, and pics, and even though I was outside for like 2 hours I never needed a coat. My friend said the weather went up to 17 degrees. Crazy! And 2) It's possible to have a lovely wedding on the cheap! We're young, we're the first to get married of everyone we know, no one in the wedding party had any idea what we were doing (no one has really been to weddings before, maybe just a couple), but it turned out in the end! And we had a super cheap budget, but by doing our research and putting the time into it, the wedding didn't reflect the prices we paid.

For now, just the good stuff - the pics! :D

My November Wedding

I didn't post alot before my wedding, but I know how much I like seeing other peoples wedding photos.

We got married in North Vancouver on 14 November 2009. Everything went really smoothly, which was a bit of a shock considering we planned the wedding in under 3 months.

My dress (Diamante by Pronovias)

My very comfy shoes and necklace. The week of the wedding my sister told me that my original jewelery was ugly, so I panicked and had my Dad running around to purchase a new necklace the day before the wedding.

My sister did my moms makeup, while I did my own.

Dh and me. We took most of our pictures at the Londsdale Quay Hotel and Waterfront Park in North Vancouver

DH brother was his BM. He is a photographer, but was banned from his camera until the reception. Five minutes into pictures, the iphone was already out. lol.

Although it stopped raining long enough to get most of our pictures outside, it was still quite wet and the gown definitely required hiking

My DH and I walked each other down the aisle.

During the sermon the pastor decided to poke fun at my DH. We had not planned to go on a honeymoon, but he got laid off two weeks before the wedding, so we decided it was ment to be, and promptly booked ourselves a 10 day trip down south.

Our church is so beautiful and unique, it is set up in the round with a central alter.

We didn't include the signing of the marriage licence in the ceremony. So we have the very formal signing on the piano shots!

I am so glad we took time to just relax after the ceremony. This is also a good shot of the great banners that my SIL made for her wedding 5 years ago, and I happily re used!

A good bouquet shot, and the pew bows (also from SIL with new flowers, of course)

As a gift, my MIL commissioned this floral piece for the church entry way from good friend.

For favours we made custom chocolate bars that doubled as seat cards. I also made menus to match.

Our seating carts and list (the long thing on the table) and our guest book, which was a photo book with lined pages throughout.

My DH OC planned a sword arch for our grand entrance. My DH changed into his mess kit (military version of a tux) for the reception.

An overview of our set up. I made the curtains under the balcony to cover "the ugly" of the note boards, and office doors behind. We had our bar, and dance floor set up upstairs in the combined mess, the separation really worked well for mingling after dinner.

I love the atmosphere this picture shows!

We had a dessert buffet instead of a cake. Unfortunately we never made it to the dessert table ourselves, but the pictures look yummy.

Our first dance! Early in our relationship my DH taught me to swing dance, so it was only appropriate to have More by Dean Martin for our first dance.

I absolutely loved our photographer, Mayan Photo. She was so easy to work with and captured so many great memories, without us feeling like we were in a fish bowl.

So the wedding has come and gone and we are finally going to tackle the Thank you cards. We got married Nov 14, I hope it's still in the respectable timeframe.

My question to you is how do you thank folks for their generous $$$ gifts? Do we tell them that we used it for our deposit on our new home? Do we tell them it helped pay for the wedding?

What about people who didn't give a gift, do we just thank them for coming?

After our original venue cancelled on us we were left without a lot of time and the places we both liked and could afford were already booked. I remembered liking the inside of Eggspectations and asked my wife to call and ask if they held weddings. They never had but agreed to host ours and I am so happy they did! I love the décor – it has exposed brick and cement floors (sort of an industrial style) which I think looked really nice juxtaposed with blue lights and white linens. And using windows as our head table backdrop turned out really great. Since they are closed on Saturday night anyway they were able to give us an amazing price for food and alcohol. And, our guests were able to choose between a main entrée of Eggs Benedict, pasta, chicken, steak or salmon that night. We also were able to change our numbers right up until the day of the wedding. I really think we lucked out big time with this find! We got so many compliments from our
guests.

I gave him a 6 because we did get quite a few nice pictures. But it took 6 months and the threat of legal action to get them all. I chose Josh because another bride on WeddingBells had made a big excel spreadsheet comparing Ottawa photographers based on price, talent, etc. She chose Josh and I looked at her very detailed work and decided to just copy off of her. I felt a bit like I was copying off of somebody’s high school test and I guess this was one of those situations where cheaters don’t prosper.

He was also moving to England the day after our wedding and was clearly tired and distracted all day. He had no energy and was not much fun during the photoshoot. As he was taking pictures he kept saying things like “oh I’ll photoshop X out of the picture before I send it to you” but none of that was done.

To be honest I found wedding dress shopping at other stores annoying. Bridal consultants treated me like I was wasting their time and don’t even get me started on the no picture taking rule.

My experience at Sinders was amazing. From the first minute I was impressed by both their customer service and their selection. My saleswoman Nancy was amazing and was actually the one to pick out my dress. She encouraged me to take lots of pictures and didn’t even bat an eye when I said I wanted to go home and look at the pictures in full size on my computer before committing to buy. I called that night and placed my order and continued to be very happy with the service through the whole experience. If you are in Ottawa it is WELL worth the drive to Carleton Place. You will not be disappointed!!

The rooms were great and the price was good. The hotel itself is in a great location and has lots of amenities. They got an 8 because my guests had a lot of trouble booking. Some were told the reservation was full (when it wasn’t) others were told there weren’t any rooms with two beds (when there were). The problem was with the central booking line and when we told our guests to call the local number they were fine but when we brought the problem to their attention we really didn’t even get an apology.

You can’t really see this well in the photo but we had “Brides Bingo” for the kids. Each card had similar things (dancing people, a blue dress, etc) and then each one was tailored to the specific kid to say things like “Joe Smith’s autograph” (another child at the wedding). This allowed the unrelated kids to meet each other. And there were prizes.

We made "Bride Bingo" for the kids. When each one got to their seat they had a gift bag with colouring books and other activities and then a bingo card. The bingo card required them to find stuff at the wedding and also to get "autographs" from the other kids so that they would all meet. We had a boardgame as a prize for each kid when they finished the bingo. It went over really well!

I can't wait to get my shoes, and even though I still have time, I want to start looking because well, we love shoes, don't we ?!
I only looked on the internet, and from what I can tell, I won't be able to easily find lime green round closed pumps... pretty specific I know.
Should I wait for the summer collections to be out there, or should I directly go with wedding shoes and dye them ?
If you dyed your shoes, how was the experience ? were you happy with the result ? any "leakage" accident ?

Late November wedding- vendor review

I found the reviews on this site to be quite helpful so I will do my best to “pay it forward”.

Firstly, I would like to share some of my experiences and advice. I started with a ‘theme’, now it wasn’t a sweet 16/ party mama’s kind of thing, it was more an idea to ensure that all my choices tied together. It could be anything, a piece of fabric, a fashion icon anything that inspires… for me it was ‘art deco’ (the reason was our first wedding ceremony was held on the Empire State building on Valentine’s day). With this in mind we set out to plan our church blessing and Canadian wedding.

The second piece of advice I would recommend is start by getting quotes from at least 3 vendors before meeting any in person. This will give you an idea of what the ‘going rate’ is for your plans. Once I started to meet vendors in my price range I stopped when I found one who I got along with and understood what we were looking for. There are lots of wonderful vendors out there who do a great job; you can drive yourself crazy trying to choose!

With all that being said we were lucky to work with some absolutely fantastic people who were all super talented at their respective business. So these reviews might be a little long, but I truly loved all our vendors and want to give a good overview of my experience. Here they are in no particular order:

Solaris Entertainment

We wanted an all inclusive musical experience and that’s what we got. We had all age groups on the dance floor having a great time and we received compliments on the music from older aunts and uncles, my parent’s contemporaries and our friends and cousins. This company is probably the least invasive entertainment company out there. They offer a free no-hassle consultation which means if you like them you call them and hire them, if you don’t call them they don’t call you. Also they offer 2 meetings after the initial consultation; they do this … to steal a quote from the owner… to ensure that your musical fingerprint is on the day. The best part of this company is they can book all your entertainment needs including but not limited to: DJ, Bands, Singers, string groups, jazz trios, dancer, and magicians….anything you can pretty much think of.
Frugal – yes; Worth every penny- and them some!

Andy’s Cakes

We had a look that we wanted to achieve and were very lucky to find Andy who made it happen in such delicious fashion. Andy has a background in fine arts and a passion for cake making which is the perfect combination. She took the lead in designing our cake doing her own research to make it happen. Additionally, I secretly worked with Andy to create a surprise groom’s cake for my hubby. He is a huge Yankee fan and relocated to Toronto to be with me so it was a great treat for him to remember his team’s great year.
These cakes tasted even better than they looked. I can’t tell you how impressed I was by Andy’s work on all levels!
Wedding cake flavours- rich chocolate cake/ chocolate mousse filling and chocolate butter cream
- Dulce de leche...vanilla egg white cake (really light and fluffy) with a caramel mousse and chocolate ganache with a vanilla butter cream (takes on a mocha flavour)

Debbie is fantastic, her show room is a show piece and she is very professional and understanding. I only needed a short meeting to know that Debbie was the decorator we needed. She did all our flowers, which are stunning in the photos and more beautiful in person as well as all hall décor. The chair covers looked brand new, the copper touches on the tie back were a wonderful idea and the head table was a masterpiece. She even surprised me with beautiful rose petals on the cake and head tables. I can’t say enough about how lovely and personable Debbie is. Give her a call if you want your venue to look spectacular or you want showpiece flowers!

Amanda and her assistant were wonderful! I needed a hair and make up person who could work on site as my grandmother is older and one of my bridesmaids is pregnant. Amanda was a wonderful solution. She did my grandmother’s makeup (80+ years old), my mother’s hair and make up (60+) and 2 bridesmaids hair and makeup in record time with a wonderful style. She was pleasant, knowledgeable and efficient. She is super well priced and if I could go back in time I would have had her do my makeup as well. (I ended up using another wonderful makeup artist but she doesn’t fall under the frugal category)
Frugal – Super Frugal; Worth every penny- for sure!

We had a large contingent of the groom’s family staying in a hotel as well as many older family members who could not manage the drive up the Manor. We decided that we needed a mode of transportation that didn’t break the bank. We were very fortunate to find this family run operation. We were able to charter a school bus (although this company does not do school bus runs and thus the vehicles are in excellent condition) and move everyone easily, conveniently and frugally. Our driver was excellent and more than fulfilled our requirements. I highly recommend this organization

I worked with Sandy and she is fantastic. I was able to secure a block rate and hold rooms without leaving a credit card. Our guests were able to book online or by phone and were placed in the block. I was given updates of who had booked and was able to follow up with the stragglers before the rooms were released. I highly recommend this hotel; everyone enjoyed their stay with no complaints. Our pregnant bridesmaid was even given a treat bag with snacks and a bottle of water at check-in

There are no words to describe how wonderful these people are! From our first contact with Diane to the last person we spoke to as we left there is nothing bad to say about this venue. The food was fantastic, restaurant made-to-order quality. The event staff and bartenders are pleasant, helpful and appear genuinely happy to be at work. The facility is immaculate and the grounds are spectacular. We had 3 stations set up after dinner and the lines moved quickly and the staff prepared great looking treats…nothing rushed about the presentation or the service. The years of experience that the bypeterandpaul’s team has really shows through, they even gave us a snack bag of sandwiches, beverages and chips in case the groom and I had done too much socializing and not enough eating. If you don’t mind having your event a little north of the city definitely go visit The Manor
Frugal- Definitely; Worth every penny- money more than well spent.

The photos speak for themselves…. But I can’t help it I have to say more! I felt a great connection with Margaret from the moment I met her. Her online work is bettered by her portfolio which she brought to the first meeting. But the most important part of selecting a photographer is personality and this lady is FANTASTIC! She truly enjoys her work and looks forward to being part of your day. She is always on the lookout for the best angle or shot but didn’t miss a ‘moment’. Her second shooter for our event was Karen, and she was equally fantastic! My husband and I aren’t great in front of a camera but these ladies managed to get the best of us on film. Beyond the wonderful experience and the great results, they really pay attention to what’s going on around them. My husband and I were part of a long and tiring receiving line, I asked one of the usher to please get me a glass of wine, but he couldn’t hear me so I repeated myself. Before he could even move Karen had a glass of wine in my hand…. Way ABOVE AND BEYOND the call of duty and much appreciate. That’s just one moment, these ladies were a huge part of our day and made us a wonderful record of our day….. Thanks so much Mags!

Bomboniere- The picture frames were from William Ashley Sale and the photos were from the New York wedding ceremony and printed on Shutterfly. My mom, sister, one of my best friends and some of my cousins came over and we decorated the frames with ribbon and the requisite almonds.

Hi ladies!

I just thought that I would post some of the detail and decor shots from the wedding, since that was mostly what I posted about haha. All of the stationary was designed by me, and put together with some help from my bridesmaids. All of the flowers and decor were done by my amazing mom, who is so ridiculously talented it's crazy. She also bought and paid for it all..I am so lucky! We ended up 20 tables of 10, so my mom did 2 different types of centerpieces. Half were tall vases with branches, which had orchids and diamonds attached. The other half were short vases with orchids, river rocks in water with floating candles.
The candy buffet consisted of only pink candies and macaroons and was pretty much demolished by the time we got back from our photos, as was most of the appetizers the guests were served which included mini sliders (burgers), anti pasto (meats and cheeses), gourmet dips and much more.

There were different shades of pink roses everywhere, and tons of rose petals. We even gave the kids cones with rose petals in them, which they toss at us during our first dance. The kids also got loot bags with cameras and a I Spy game (see post way down), and pencils to check off what they found. I can't wait to get them developed! We also had a photobooth which kept all 20 kids occupied for the whole night, and many adults too. The photos are amazing!

The dessert buffet came during the midnight buffet of pizza, homemade sausages and buns. Most of the desserts were also homemade by my very talented cousins, and the ones that were bought were from an Italian bakery.

Everything was absolutely perfect....I could not ask for anything more. It Truly was the best day of my life!

Learn from my mistake and back up your Pro photos on your harddrive, and extra discs!!!

DH and I went to Walmart to print some photos. For some reason my disc stopped reading and the computer spit it out. When I took the CD in my hand IT WAS CRACKED!!!!!! :crying:

I did not back up these files ANYWHERE!! Other than resized/low quality images that I copied to my drive for Facebook :(:(:(:(

Fortunately, my photographer is an angel is willing to give us another copy, since we paid a hefty price for this CD in our package! Backing up and copying is the FIRST thing I am doing!

I am in desperate need of a external harddrive for reasons like this. So many pictures that I need to protect! My brother has one so I think I will ask him to keep then of his for extra safekeeping!

So we are 3 months away now and FH and the boys are going to choose their tuxes in the new year. I have no freaking idea what to do in terms of their vests and ties. I was going to do FH in a white or off white vest and tie and then do the guys in a black vest an d black tie but my mum says that looks too much like a business suit as opposed to a wedding. My colours are chocolate brown and green but I am not sure if I want the guys to wear too much colour. I don't know. I'm so confused. So please ladies.... show me your grooms and groomsmen.
