I've always wanted to give my children unique names, not a name that four or five other children in their class will also have. As FH is Welsh, we have decided to use welsh names for our children. For girls, we like Anwen, Ariene, Seren, Bronwyn, and Rhiannon. For boys, we like Garreth. FH also likes Owyn (welsh Owen), but it is WAY too common here.
Since his family is welsh, there are a lot of uncommon names on FH's side, such as Hywel, Bethan, Gerwyn, Angharad, Seren, Eira, and Gwenllian. They're uncommon names here in Canada, but they may not be so uncommon on Wales (though I can't be sure of this). A lot of welsh names are not pronounced how they are spelled. For example, Hywel (FH's father) is pronounced Hue-ull (he gets a lot of mispronunciations with his name, like Hugel, Hymez, etc... lol!). We picked welsh names that are pronounced as they are spelled so our kids wouldn't have a hard time with them but could still have a name with some heritage behind it.
RE: Weird, unusual or uncommon baby names

My cousin named his first son Charm and his second son Koi.

RE: Weird, unusual or uncommon baby names

My DD name is Montana.... not too common. And after FH and I get married we are going to try for another, and if its a girl it will be Carolina and if its a boy it will be Lincoln (so we can call him Link). When I was preggos with Montana if she was a boy her name was going to be Pheonix. We chose Joelle and Annaliese for our girls. Joelle is a little more common with between 5 and 10 in BC in the last few years (this is out of about 20,000 births per year), but less than 5 in her birth year. Annaliese has less than 5 in BC for the last several years, so very uncommon, but still pretty and feminine.

Just to note that Lily has become very popular. It has been in the top 20 in BC for the last 2 years. Gabriel is also a fairly common name in BC, probably in the top 50. Great minds think alike!

gr8blessings

RE: Weird, unusual or uncommon baby names

A friend named his son Jacob - but its spelt Jakub (polish)

RE: Weird, unusual or uncommon baby names

I like names that are not all that common but are still classic or not "new" names.

Lilly for a girl and Gabriel for a boy.

RE: Weird, unusual or uncommon baby names

My boys are Bryar and Keenan and my daughter is Madison Ni Kole

RE: Weird, unusual or uncommon baby names

Our little girls name is going to be Meika Jeanine or MJ for short. Her name is Lynneth, her mom was Glodine, and her dad was Athol. And my grandmother on the other side was named Aurele.

I like the name Jacob for a boy but have thought of spelling it Jakob. But as my mom pointed out to me, he would never find anything with his name on it. My FH had that issue growing up and hated it as a kid.

I say to each their own. I know that I have heard names that I would never personally choose but I couldn't imagine giving someone grief over it.

P.S. Spell check didn't like any of those names. :)

RE: Weird, unusual or uncommon baby names

My favorite names for a boy are:

Jonathan

Nathan

Ethan

Aden

Hayden

Adren

RE: Weird, unusual or uncommon baby names

My three must favorite names for a girl are

Isabelle, Olivia & Makayla

but I also like:

Emily

Marissa

Clarissa

Carissa

Makenna

Kindra

RE: Weird, unusual or uncommon baby names

my daughter's name is Storme(storm) and my son's name is Xavier

there's 2 names you don't hear too often!

my sister called me a wanna be hippie when was ipicking a name for my daughter because it was going to be Raine or Storme-storme won!

Storme Aurora Faith

and

Xavier Alexander James

RE: Weird, unusual or uncommon baby names

My first son's name is Quinn as well.

RE: Weird, unusual or uncommon baby names

I like taking common names and changing the spelling. I don't use the name, I go by Erica, but I do have a ring with Cuinn on it, and people are always confused by the C.

Had I been a boy, my name would have been Kain Aidan (or Aiden, can't remember).

We won't be giving our child a strange name. I'm not personally a big fan of spelling common names in a 'different' way. There was a girl in my class names Sarah, but it was spelled Cera. It lead to TONS of confusion on the part of our teachers (but in this case, I'm not too sure why). We'll name our children names that work in both German and English, so that neither family has to struggle with the pronounciation.

My cousin named her son Drayden, and it took them a long time to decide on a spelling. They toyed with Drédon, etc... but figured it would pose too many problems in school.

I actually like a lot of Geilic names, which are spelled very differently from the way they're pronounced, and if we choose one for our child, we won't anglosize the spelling, we'll leave it in its original form.

RE: Weird, unusual or uncommon baby names

My girls names are not unusual or anything.. but I chose to spell them differently..

Catelin and Emalee.. instead of caitlyn or emily and my sons name is Nicolas I left out the H the other 2 have regular names.

RE: Weird, unusual or uncommon baby names

Our ds is named Keaghan - which I didn't think was weird or uncommon - but we have lots of negative feedback on his name so I guess that makes it weird!!!
