Wouldn't that be awesome if all of a sudden your body starts behaving!? Sometimes maybe our reproductive organs just need to be scared straight by going to a doctor to get a diagnosis? :P It DOES look like you O'd, although some of your pre-O temps were above the coverline, but that can happen! I sure hope you did! Keep us posted if AF shows up or if there's a BFP....!!!! :)

Thank you Nondoa, for sharing about Evening Primrose Oil, that's something else I will check into!

There is actually a holistic health trade fair in my city this weekend, so I plan on going to check that out and maybe I can scope out a naturopath for myself... we'll see!

RE: Long/Irregular cycles - support thread!

Hi there,
I had long irregular cycle too and I took "evening primerose oil" and it did work great for me, I can feel my ovulation and my cycle are now around 30 days.
I am not ttc because I still have an low iron that I need to take care of.
I just wanted to share.
Take care
Nathalie

RE: Long/Irregular cycles - support thread!

Hey Janelle, I'm still here! The last two have been 31 days and I'm still taking the pills and drops the naturopath gave me. The naturopath really helped out my cycles. The appointment for the naturopathic doctor was covered under my benefits at work, so you should check out your benefits program at work b/c you may get money reimbursed.

The naturopathic doctor said that my problem was an underactive thyroid and the drops and pills she gave me were to kick start the thyroid into working. I should only have to take the pills for three months and after that usually the thryoid will continue functioning without needing the pills. I'll wait to see if that happens, but I think it will.

Good luck!

RE: Long/Irregular cycles - support thread!

Alright, cd35... and nothing.... There are all sorts of articles on the internet about it, and I don't know much about it myself, except I have two friends who have it, and a lot of the women on here, and especially in this thread have been diagnosed with it as well. Menstrual cycles are often long or irregular, and miscarriages are unfortunately more common as well. I am sure some of the other ladies can provide more info. Only your doctor can diagnose it, most ladies seem to get an ultrasound which detects the cysts on the ovaries.

RE: Long/Irregular cycles - support thread!

I have always had really bad acne, now I am started to get them on my jaw line & neck.
What is PCOS? My current cycle is going to be about 30 days! My AF is normal now. Before my AF was light for three or four days, but the last one I had was one day of very heavy bleeding and it was 5 days. The naturopath said that is a normal, healthy AF, much to my dismay b/c I've never experienced that. She gave me more supplements to take for my thyroid and said that usually after taking these for three months then you can go off them and still be normal for most of her patiences. I did respond very well to the herbs she gave me, so I think I'll be normal. ("Normal")! I would recommend going to a naturopath if you have cycle issues b/c lots of women have underactive thyroids she said and it's pretty simple to fix.

If you find a good naturopath then I would say try it out and see what he/she says b/c it can make a difference and it wasn't difficult at all for me. She told me to avoid sugars, milk and wheat and I did well with avoiding the sugars and milk, but I didn't do too well in avoiding wheat.

I hope you ladies get your issues straightened out soon!

RE: Long/Irregular cycles - support thread!

Hi Emilie,

I've never tried that website but I may have to check it out! I currently am charting using fertilityfriend.com. Congratulations on your cycles getting back to normal! May I ask if you know what caused them to be long before?

RE: Long/Irregular cycles - support thread!

Hello ladies!

Just wondering if any of you guys have used a website called mymonthlycycles.com ?

I'm using it right now and, so far, I like it. You can keep track of everything - periods, CM, OV, symptoms, etc... All in one place. It's very user friendly! And... It's free! Oh, how I love free stuff!

Anyways, no luck last month but it was only our first month really trying. I'm pretty sure, according to my CM (sorry if TMI), that I am OV right now so we're trying 'harder' this month... No pun intended! lol

Good luck to the rest of you ladies... I think that, after about 2.5 years of turmoil, my cycles are finally getting back on track!

I'm down to 33 days between cycles from a record high of 70... So I think I'm doing pretty good.

I'm also taking lots of vitamins to make sure that if we do get pregnant again, our pregnancy will be healthier. Not that it wasn't healthy before, but I think the prenatals I took weren't helping as much as they should have.

If my message is all jumbled, I'm sorry! I'm just ending an 18.5 hour work day... Ugh.

Goodnight!

RE: Long/Irregular cycles - support thread!

Thanks ladies!

Hippiechic: "That is so interesting. How nice would that be? Getting less periods but being just as fertile? Hmmm... Would be nice! I imagine you would see two peaking patterns in one cycle, but I have never seen it. Maybe I will go stalk some charts on Fertility Friend! ;)

RE: Long/Irregular cycles - support thread!

jmhien - Glad to hear your trip to the doc was successful.

The naturopath told me my thyroid was underactive even though my doc tells me it's normal, and I also have low waking temps. The naturopath said you have to be careful with the results from the doctor b/c the ranges are so wide that most people fit in the range and they still have a problem.

Currently, I'm taking all the supplements the naturopath gave me and I am feeling more energetic and I don't have sugar cravings anymore. I would get massive sugar cravings before and it's very bad to eat things that make your insulin levels rise so fast and then they fall. The body likes to be in an equilibruim state.

Hopefully, your body gets back on track soon!

RE: Long/Irregular cycles - support thread!
jmhein (8/14/2008)
Sofaqueen - I am sooo interested to see how the naturopath stuff works out for you!

So I went to see my doctor this afternoon about my 51 day cycles off of bcp, and it went pretty well, I thought I'd share the jist of it in case it helps anyone else:
First of all I told the doctor I had gone off the pill at the end of April, had two 51 days cycles so far, and showed him my chart from Fertility Friend because I had charted my second cycle. He seemed impressed I was charting and that I had done so much research.

He said I likely have post-pill amenorrhea, where your body just takes a while to remember what to do after the pill. He said that sometimes it doesnt matter if a woman is on the pill for a month or for 10 years, some women will get this and there's no telling why or how long it will last. He said he's known of cases where women didnt get a period for two years after bcp! Oh my heavens, that is crazy! Good thing I stopped the bcp 2 years before we plan on TTC!
He also said to keep tracking my cycle, he said it's also possible to ovulate twice in one cycle and only get one period! He said that could also be happening in my case. That is so interesting. I have never heard of ovulating twice in one cycle. Do you have any idea how that would look on your chart?
He said because it does look like I am at least ovulating, maybe 51 days will be my new normal, he knows of no problems with conceiving while having long cycles, just that your chances per year are less because cycles are so long. That was at least somewhat encouraging, that he doesnt know of problems occuring from late ovulation... (although I hope 51 days is NOT my new normal...)
I asked him about other causes, I asked him if I could have PCOS, and he said he doubted it, since I dont have the other traits such as being overweight, excessive body hair, etc. He said if I did notice some sudden weight gains to go back in to see him.
He DID send me to get blood work done and that was to check my thyroid. He said we could just check that out, as a thyroid imbalance could cause long cycles, SO, I at least got SOMETHING tested and hopefully I can rule it out at least. I read somewhere that a lower body temperature can be related to a thyroid issue as well. I think it was a temp of 36.5 Celsius or lower can indicate a thyroid problem. Hopefully you can rule that out!
He said dh and I just have to try harder! LOL! He's kind of funny. He said if there's still no change in a year to go back and see him, but I of course would not be willing to wait a year, so he will be seeing me in 6 months if I am still frustrated and confused and not preggers!! BUT, I KNOW dh and I havent tried very hard yet, with my long cycles I havent really known what was going on so we havent had our timing right at ALL. SO we will try harder this cycle and I will keep tracking and maybe my cycles will start getting shorter too. Fingers crossed!

SOOOO, really do I know anything I didnt know before? No. But I guess I feel a little better that HE wasnt too concerned. AND if I have a thyroid issue, the blood test should let me know that next week I assume. Sorry for the mile-long recap! Hopefully it might help someone else in the same situation.

OH, and he did tell me to make sure I'm taking folic acid if we're ttc! I told him I was taking prenatals and he said that was great.!
It is nice that your doctor was so supportive of your charting.
I have no news on my cycle. I think I should get AF in all her glory later today. I am on CD51. So this means it's my second cycle off the pill and both cycles have been 51 days long. Isn't that interesting? Is 51 days my new normal cycle length? That cant be good!!!?? AND since I've been charting, I know I ov'd on CD40, and this means I have an 11 day luteal phase, which is on the short side of normal. :ermm: I am very glad AF finally showed up, but now I'm more concerned about it than ever!

I just made an appt to see my dr for next week Thursday. I want to see if he has any cause for concern. I want to be pro-active about my health. If anything is wrong I'd like to start exploring ways to make it better as soon as possible.

Soooo... today I feel kinda worried, cranky, sad. Could be the hormones! LOL!

RE: Long/Irregular cycles - support thread!

I am just (im)patiently waiting for AF. She should be showing up Saturday if I have a 14 day luteal phase. It's pretty nice to have a good idea of when she'll show up! I am totally addicted to temp charting now! :D

I totally cant wait for her to come and get rid of this horrible bloatedness I get at the end of every day!

And then I can start a brand new cycle and maybe it will be more normal, but regardless, I know I am at least ovulating, so I will be ttc way harder with dh next cycle!

RE: Long/Irregular cycles - support thread!

Bumping

RE: Long/Irregular cycles - support thread!

It may take the body a year to regulate once stopping the BCP. The naturopath I saw said it is a very common problem, and my doc also said it can take up to a year to regulate your body.

RE: Long/Irregular cycles - support thread!

I know exactly how you feel about being frustrated.

we decided last April that we wanted to start ttc. After i got off the bcp i had 2 regular 28 day cycles, then they just stopped all together (which would be great if we weren't ttc). After a couple of months of waiting for my body to regulate itself I finally went to see our family doctor. At first he thought that it could be due to pcos (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome) because I had 90-120 day cycles before i started bcp. So when my ultrasounds came back clean he was just as confused as I was. So after tons of blood work and tests we still had no answers, he referred me to a specialist who I finally got an appointment with this past January.

My specialist figured that my problem was due to an insulin resistance, meaning that my body was not using the insulin it produced causing my hormones to be out of whack. So as a solution he put me on medication usually used for people with type 2 diabetes that had worked wonders on women with pcos and thought it might help to lower my blood sugar and force my body to use the insulin and regulate my hormones. So I've been taking that for about 6 months now. After about 4 months I finally started my cycle again (35 days). That lasted for 2 months and now I am up to 50 days and counting since my last cycle.

So as you can see, I know what you mean by frustrating. Nothing is more frustrating than playing the waiting game.

But it definitely helps to have a fiance that is so supportive. I think he is the only thing keeping me from falling apart sometime.
