mombride - ooooh, that's good information. Our wedding is in Edmonton and it has recently been in the news about the city introducing a minimum drink charge, but it won't be after our wedding.

When we originally spoke with the hotel about this a few months ago, they indicated that other weddings have had the money jar, and that was no problem.

We have sent our our invites already. But we plan to spread the word before hand through friends and family.

have you checked the liquor laws where you are?

don't know about there but in mb it is now illegal to sell drinks for less than the minimum charge ($2.35?) per drink and whoever holds the liquor license could get fined here (and possibly the party shut down) if a liquor inspector happens to pop by and sees a sign advertising drinks for under the min charge.

if there are no regulations on min prices then i'd just keep it simple and post a sign $2 per drink and sell drink tickets (then you can have a better control on verifying how many drinks the venue is charging you for when you settle up later if you go by the no of tickets they produce)

if there are regulations like in mb, you'd pretty much have to just leave a tip jar at the bar and ask your guests to leave a $2 tip for the couple per drink or just take your chances and hope your wedding isn't on the list of random inspections stop for that night.

My parents are buying the wine for everyone and the first two drinks for everyone over 18 (legal drinking age in Alberta is 18) so on their placecards, in the middle, there will be two small tickets for drinks, so that sounds good to us. We are having a bartender, and we are purchasing our drinks, however to try and get everyone to not waste as many drinks, we are having non-alcoholic drinks for free so I think it's a good idea. Otherwise we will have the bartender giving out change so people can bring bills instead.

I might have an idea, maybe?? We are hosting our bar, we have to use the Leigons alcohol, so we are going to have 600 alcohol drink tickets and 600 non-alcohol drink tickets, we are going to have the guest as they go and get a drink pull a ticket and give it to the bartender, that way at the end of the night I know how much to pay for, so if we have 200 alcohol tickets left we only pay for 400 and the same goes for the mix, or non-alcohol tickets, if I have 400 left for that, I pay for 200. I don't know if this makes sense to you, but maybe this will help, then you don't over pay.

We're having a twoonie bar too but I hadn't thought about putting signs up. I've made sure that word has gotten around that it's a twoonie bar but I think having signs is a good idea. Hmmm...gonna have to think about that one.

I think your idea is great! My best friend had a toonie bar and everyone loved it! They thought it was just a wonderful idea. They could drink and they could get two for the cost of one.....lol any newfie would love that! haha

Still trying to think of some ideas though..I'll get back to you if I find something

This made me laugh. I am picturing all our guests loaded down with clanging pockets and hand bags over flowing with change!

Maybe I should give some more background information. Our reception is at a hotel. We need to buy all our liquor through the hotel. If we have a cash bar, then our guests will pay for the entire cost of the drink, which is on average, $5.50. If we have a host bar, then the drinks are less expensive, and they are just counted during the evening and we are billed for the entire amount drank at the end of the night.

Since we don't have it in our budget to pay for the entire booze bill, we thought it would be considerate and "split" the cost with our guests, as opposed to having them pay the entire higher cost. Hence, the jar that is at the bar for "donations". We won't be making any money off of the booze, we propbably won't even get money to cover half the costs.

However, I really didn't start this thread to defend the choices we have made for our wedding. I just wanted some help with the signage, as I have been to other weddings with the bar set up like this. :blush:

I just wanted to point out that she said it was going on a bill, not a package. So the more people drink the more she has to pay:D

Also, I was thinking that it might be kinda hard for your guest to come with pockets full of toonies for their drinks....just a thought:hehe:

I have been to lots of "Toonie Bar" events. It's totally acceptable. As for a cute sign... hmm. I see your problem, as nothing is really coming to mind. Maybe just a sign that says "Toonie Bar" with a picture of the two of you on it? Sorry I'm not more helpful. I will give it some more thought.

to ME that sounds a little bad. If the alcohol is already included in your package, why do you need more money??? If you want them to pay for their own drinks, have a cash bar. This sounds like a money grab and i dunno... i wouldn't do it at all. but to each their own... i offer no suggestions because i think you should rethink this. For our drinks, we are having a cash/toonie bar. What I mean by that, is that we are really having a host bar, as the booze bill will be on our entire venue bill, so our guests are technically not buying each drink from the bar themselves. But we do plan on having a container at the bar, where we hope to have " cash donations" made to the bar tab.

That being said, what should the signage next to the container read? I would like something a little less harsh that "$2 a drink" or "Please put money in the jar gosh darn it for you booze".

Perhaps a cute phrase or couple of sentances?
