I'm not a fan of inviting people only for a portion of the wedding either. However, I have a few people that have double weddings that day and are only coming to the dance part, but since our venue is providing the alcohol I have to tell them how many extra people after dinner and pay a reduced amount per person for them.

That you know of...it's not like anyone would say anything in front of the bride or the family, but truthfully, lots of people are offended by this sort of thing.

My sister just got married two weeks ago, and she invited a portion of people to the ceremony and the dance, but not the meal. It went over well, people weren't offended.

The only thing I would suggest is make sure you have a late lunch so people can snack during the dance.

I was kind of against it as well, I said that I had no problem with people showing up afterwards if they wanted to. MIL suggested doing up an invitation and I was like no way! I didn't want people to think we we just after more gifts, I didn't really feel comfortable with sending out invites, and I really didn't want to take the time and make more invitations etc. I said that yes, anyone was welcome to come, but we were not making formal invites for it. A week or so later, I got this e-mail from MIL saying this is what she had sent around!! I was mad at first!!! But they were out by then, so what could I do!!

I think they were generally well received, we did have a bunch of people show up for the ceremony and a few show up for the dance. I figure that if people had a problem with it, then they just wouldn't come.

Truthfully and no offense to anyone who has done it but I have never been a fan of people being invited to just one portion of the wedding and not the other. For me...it's all or nothing. But that's JMO.

We had a small wedding (only 76 people) and DH's mother would have like to invite more people. So we compromised, I said that anyone was welcome at the ceremony or dance (our reception room held 150), so she sent around an e-mail to some of their friends and family so that no one felt 'left out'. The e-mail said something like:

Some people might take offence to that. I don't know. We didn't invite the no dinner people to the ceremony.

I will admit that we heard that a couple people were ticked that they weren't invited to everything - but they were also people who only got an invite so MIL wouldn't freak. We really didn't care if they were there or not

So if you invite people to the dance part and you have an open bar, how would that work. There must be an additional cost for the people and how do you know if everyone you invited showed????

We did it! We had close family and friends for the ceremony and dinner and more distant to just the dance part. Thats very common here.

Hi Ladies,

I am just wondering what you think about inviting more "distant" guests to the ceremony and then cocktails, dancing and wedding cake AFTER the dinner/speeches are over. Like our ceremony is at 3, dinner around 6, and dancing will probably start around 9ish.
The reason I am considering this is because the venue we ABSOLUTELY love and have just recently booked really recommends staying under 200 guests for dinner as it can be too tight with everything. FH has a pretty big family and we have decided to invite only first relation aunts, uncles, cousins, etc, but we are still getting close to over 200. The people we were considering inviting to join the dancing afterwards are some of FH's work friends who would understand not being invited to the dinner and maybe some more distant relatives who would probably only come to the ceremony anyways.
My parents seem fine with the whole idea because this is what they did at their wedding too, but I just wanted to see what you ladies think. Should we just not invite them at all or is it okay to invite them to dancing afterwards but no dinner??
