Look for anything that could injure yourselves or the little one, like exposed nails, improperly cut trim, splinters, etc.

- if you're moving into a house with a garage, and the weather is really yucky, unload everything into the garage as a 'staging area' and then move the items to the proper location of the house. This works really well if you have a door from the garage to the house

- label your boxes with the room they should be going into

- don't go crazy with purchasing all your furniture right away. think carefully about what you want, what you can do without for a short period of time. think about durability in relation to the price you're paying for the item

- set up your bed on the first day. like another poster said, it's nice to know that you have somewhere to rest your head after a hard day's work!

Good luck!

RE: Advice for first time mover

moving boxes - if you subscribe to 'freecycle' yahoo group, you can put a want ad in your city for moving boxes. then anyone else who has just moved, will have some to get rid of, and you won't have to spend weeks on "box look-out"!!!... grocery stores, liquor stores, blah, blah, blah.

keep leftover papers and flyers so you can wrap stuff in.

label boxes well; i know someone else said it too, but it helps to put a list of all the items in the box on the outside.

RE: Advice for first time mover
Trevs (5/28/2008)
I always make the beds a priority. It's nice to know that your comfy bed is ready and waiting for you after a long day of moving and unpacking!
Amen to that!

Also, don't forget to get some food, or to have cash around for take out.

I found it hand to have EVERYTHING labelled with rooms, including furniture so it just went into that room, and we werne't stuck with a room full of boxes

Make sure you know where all your important stuff is-bathroom items, phone (if you have hook up right away), etc

Try and keep one box with everything you'll need the first day or two, and opne that first...and it might be handy to have a knife around for opening things.

Also, we changed all our locks the first night (obviously not a new house) and that took forever. If you are doing that, might want to start right away...

Also, curtains! If your house doesnt have them, put them up first. Nothing says, 'hi, look at us walking around with all this expensive stuff' like open windows.

RE: Advice for first time mover

thanks everyone! If you live with your parents hopefully you will be able to move in gradually, as pp suggested, it's nice to start taking things over little by little if you can, and also do those little renos/fix ups that you might want to do.

We have friends moving with a 12 month old in a few weeks, and they are doing new carpeting in their house now and painting and then on moving weekend, their son is going to grandma's all weekend (fri-sun), giving the couple a good 3 days to get things organized. Maybe something like that would be good?

My biggest moving tip is to label everything really well (great details) when you pack, so that you know exactly what is in each box, especially if you aren't unpacking that box immediately

RE: Advice for first time mover

are all of your utilities hooked up or in the process of being set up?

if you want to do any minor reno's now would be the time to it, such as painting, putting in new flooring, etc.

for sure CLEAN the whole house, top to bottom. cupboards, walls, bathrooms, everything. if there is carpet vacuum it really well and have them steam cleaned. you never really know how well the previous owners kept their house and since you have a baby, for sure clean everything really well.

change your address on your licences, registration, insurance, bank and the government - very important.

....i can't think of anything else. hope this helps.

RE: Advice for first time mover

how long is the moving period between homes?

we just bought a house and got our keys last week, however my lease isnt up until the end of this week.

we've been moving slowly a little bit everyday and its soooo much easier . I move a box and then un-pack it right away in the new house.

- someone to watch your dd on moving day is definitly priority #1

Advice for first time mover

My husband and I just bought our first house. We both never lived anywhere really but at our parent's houses so this is all new to us. What do we do right away? What are somethings that I might not think of that I'll need and also we have a 15 month old so what about her? I would think her room would be first priority. Thanks!!
