I told FH last night that I want him to call the original store and find out what they will do for us. especially because we were thinking about getting our wedding bands there too. *sigh*. I wonder if he called...

I'm going to have my ring brought in to the store to be all cleaned, claws tightened etc a few weeks before the wedding so if it comes down to it we'll do it all at once there. I just like the thought of having an outside pair of eyes take a look at it.

on the (sort of) plus side... when i look really REALLLY REALLYY close at the inside of the ring I can kind of see the PLAT stamp... but it's so faint it's why I missed it. OR maybe i'm just wishfull thinking. LOL.

RE: have you doubted the 'specs' of your ering?

Celestial: Any update?

RE: have you doubted the 'specs' of your ering?

I agree with previous posters, platinum is heavier than gold and it is always stamped PLAT just as gold is always stamped with the Karat, i.e. 14k etc.

RE: have you doubted the 'specs' of your ering?

Ya i don't doubt mine...i bought mine from a well known store but took it to an independant jewler for my appraisal so...if there was any issues i would have learned it then...so...the guy who apparaised my ring had the exact same specs as what we were told when we bought the ring! :) but ya....keep us posted..if you have any doubts.....do what you have to until you feel satisfied! Your going to have it the rest of your life.....of course you want to make sure it is what you think it is

RE: have you doubted the 'specs' of your ering?

definitely check the weight. whenever I show a person my ring they always say- "this is platinum" just by the weight.

and when I got an allergic reaction to my first e-ring that was white gold, we upgraded to a platinum band and the band alone [minus the price of the gold band] it cost us 1300 to upgrade! that is a significant difference.

and both my ering and band say PLAT in the inside.

keep us posted!

RE: have you doubted the 'specs' of your ering?

Have the store you bought it at agree to pay for your appraisal.......they should have provided you with the papers and stores appraisal on the ring when you bought it.

RE: have you doubted the 'specs' of your ering?

I don't know a whole lot about rings, but I do know that if it starts to turn yellowish/goldish with time, then it is definately white gold rather than platinum.

RE: have you doubted the 'specs' of your ering?

ok I'm glad I'm not crazy!! I'm going back to the jewelry store tonight to request some documents on my ering. I mean really, it shouldn't matter how much you pay for a ring.. it still has the same diamond etc. *argh* frustrating! At the time we looked (and then FH purchased with out me knowing) the ring was regular $2K something and was on sale for $1K something.. i forget the exact dollar amount at the moment with all these other things going on in my head.

I'm looking SUPER close at the band, and on the inside I can almost see the "PLAT" looks like it was worn down (again when it was sized).... but i'm not positive.. or maybe it's wishfull thinking? lol. I hate the thought of jewelry stores selling product under false information.

I am also going to get an outside appraisal done. There is a goldsmith in town that apparently does them for $65. for piece of mind i think that's a good price.

*keeping my fingers crossed* I'll be back with details later!

RE: have you doubted the 'specs' of your ering?

I know fo one jewellery store that has gotten into trouble a few times for 'false information' about their products...a friend bought a 'gold' necklace only to find out it wasn't gold....and i read in the paper about a girl who was told she had a diamond engagment ring...when only the centre stone was diamond, the rest were CZ!

I would get it appraised for sure...i have never heard of rings coming w/o paper work

RE: have you doubted the 'specs' of your ering?

Uh oh. Keep this in mind..jewelery ppl are like used car salesmen..they lie. It is VERY true about the weight of PLAT against gold. It is very possible that only the upper setting is PLAT and the actual e-ring band is only white gold. You should of received a document with the ring FOR SURE and on the reciept it should also state a PLAT band. Honestly if your band was anything under $500 (assuming it has no stones on the band) I would be very concerned if it is plated gold. And yes, I am taking the sale in mind. Under $1000 for a PLAT band is almost unheard of.

BTW..my sister works at a vary well known HUGE jewelery store. I get all the ins and outs from her. There are certain stores out there that have a VERY bad name in the business~~

RE: have you doubted the 'specs' of your ering?

My ring is platinum it has PLAT on the inside of the band. Also, if you doubt the ring then try this...platinum is substantially heavier than gold and you can feel the difference when holding a gold ring and a platinum ring. Hold a gold ring and then a platinum ring, and you can tell the difference right away in weight. The platinum is heavy. It's quite surprising actually.

RE: have you doubted the 'specs' of your ering?

I agree. Get an outside appraisal. If they're screwing you around, they may just fudge the appraisal too, and you'll still wonder.

RE: have you doubted the 'specs' of your ering?

Platinum really isn't rare at all. And its not ALWAYS super expensive. Definitely go get your ring appraised somewhere to put your mind at rest but I think you're over thinking this a little!! Don't worry!

RE: have you doubted the 'specs' of your ering?

Don't get the appraisal done where you bought it, especially if you doubt their honesty. My rings have PT950 stamped on the inside but it is not small enough nor in an area where it would be eliminated if the ring were sized.

have you doubted the 'specs' of your ering?

I'm running into an issue with my Ering. We were told it was Platinum many many times by the jewelery store (before and after it was purchased).. but we never received any documents with the ring. I could have swore on the inside of the band it was stamped PLAT but when it was resized to fit me... that was removed, now it says nothing on the inside.

We were out shopping for wedding bands today and another jewelery store told us that no one in (our city) sells plat bands and that it must just be a plat setting... FH is furious!! so we go back to the original store and in casual conversation with another clerk we bring this up (the manager is who we dealt with before was not in today). They told us that they have definitely sold plat rings so who ever told us you can't get plat (in our city) is crazy. They suggested we come back when the manager is there (since we have already dealt with him) and ask for an appraisal so we have documents for insurance purposes.

Now my ring wasn't crazy expensive like some of you girls on here... but it was enough. When FH bought it, it was actually on sale which put it in his "comfort zone" price range. And apparently this is why we didn't receive any paperwork on the ring because they don't do that for their 50% off rings. which makes NO sense to me... this is why i'm doubting that it is what they said it was..

We are also thinking about getting an outside appraisal as well. But has anyone else had reason to doubt that the ring they purchased is what they were told??
