Here is my input on the situation.
Your friend sounds to be very jealous, (because you "beat" her to the ring race) and Obviously does not know how diamonds work. She might get a HUGE ring, but there is no way every other spec is going to be good to allow it to be a reasonable price!
My FH game me a custom ring, very similar to yours....except there are baguette diamonds down each side....and people have said to me it's small, but realistically, if you added up all the diamonds on it and throw that into a solitaire ring it would be huge!! It just depends on how you lay out the diamonds. My ring was not any cheaper then big huge rings because the specs on the diamonds are so good!
Sooo, tell your friend....To add up all the diamond on your ring and then see who has a small ring!! :)

Ya, that is extremly materialistic! I don't even have an engagment ring yet and my fiancee is soooo upset about it. I told him if he got my ring from a pawn shop for 20 bucks it wouldn't matter to me, (he didn't go for that, he says he's saving for a nice one in the future) like you said, it's not the ring thats important, it's the meaning behind it.

I am one of the brides to be that isn't in love with her e-ring (just not what I had wanted, size has nothing to do with it, whould have like an emerald ring) But I love the fact that he spent time looking for a ring that he wanted me to wear (he couldn't find an emerald in our town) and the fact that he loves me so much he wants me to show my ring off to everyone. So I guess I do love my ring and what it represents.

I always found that people who had to complain about others were not happy with themselves.

Awe I love the idea of an engagement dog. Should have thought of that one.

I really can't believe some people like your friend can't accept that there is more to rings then money and size. For some people size is important, other price. Plus some people are like me and I just don't like oversized jewelery. It always looks great on others but I feel very awkward wearing it so I opted for something different.

Hi SofaQueen, I disagree with you regarding colour. I have an I colour diamond and it is very white not yellow AT ALL because the cut one of the best out there. You can get a J coloured diamond and still have it face up white as long the diamond is well cut. A well cut diamond will also make a smaller diamond appear larger. To the OP, I think your ring is beautiful and if you are happy with it than that is all that matters.

Here's a stock picture of my ring. Mine has a centre princess cut, not the round brilliant. I've tried taking pictures of my ring with my camera, but there is too much reflection to see it. Having engagement pics done this weekend, hopefully our photographer can get a good pic of it!

A $5,000 ring is not going to get this women some huge, beautiful diamond ring. If she wants to go for quantity over quality then she can have a big rock, but it will look awful. If she wants a good quality one carat diamond then she is looking at a diamond that will cost over $8,000; however, then you need to get the diamond set in gold or platinum. For $5,000 this friend of yours will can get a diamond larger than a carat, but it would probably be a I or J colour diamond (practically yellow). Um..not to burst your friends little bubble..but she will not get a REAL diamond that is huge for anywhere near 5k. Anything over 1.5c even if it is crap will cost over 5k. Also the inclusions are MUCH easier to see in a big rock. Who wants to go around waving a cloudy, grey, sparkle-less diamond and act all high and mighty about it? Oh, I forgot..someone like her.

I love my ring and it's not huge i have a princess cut solitaire and i love it, (granted i picked it out) but it's perfect and i wouldn't want anything bigger. But knowing how much mine cost and it's a 3/4 ct. diamond, I'm not sure how she intends to get a huge diamond for $5000. I paid cost for mine i used to work for a jewellery manufacturer but the retail value on my ring is crazy compared to what i pad. I think your friend is a bit materialistic. As long as u love it that's all that counts.

I agree with the "wow $5000" comment. Say that, it should shut her up for a while.

And in retrospective, I don't think that bigger is better in some cases. If you like your ring that is all that matters. I have a friend who is EXACTLY the same way. Everything is a competition. Which is dumb, but if she thinks $5000 is a lot for a ring, reminder her that there are people out there that spend upwards of $25,000 for a ring and if she thinks that she needs to out do you, understand that she is just making herself look very dumb. She's insecure because she doesn't have a ring and you do.

I have one question to ask - Is she a friend from a long time ago or was she a friend a long time ago?

I can also approach it from her angle. I suspect I might have been there. When all of your friends are moving at a particular pace and are at a prticular place in life it can be difficult to not be there with them. She's probaly trying so hard to be part of what she sees as "the" place to be - that she doesn't realize that she's hurting your feelings.

5 of FH's and I's friends married in the same year. FH and I had been together 5 years at that point. I wanted that to be us so bad I would have thrown mama off the train to get there. I probaly wasn't to nice to be around then. 4 Years later I'm OK with it, engaged and getting married on September 27, 2008 with a ring I love!

Just jumping into this post now, so this may have already been said, but the quality of the diamond is MUCH more important than the quantity. I have a three-stone ring with others around the side and that is the perfect ring for me. I couldn't believe it at the store when those big solitaires were more expensive than mine (I was like sweet, I got something better for less!) (not bashing solitaires either, I just don't prefer them). And since when does size matter anyway?

I haven't finished reading the thread yet, but from what I've read so far, it sounds like your friend has some maturing to do, and that she's really insecure. People who act like that are usually overcompensating, in my experience anyway.

But it does sound like her role in your life is probably done. People walk in and out of our lives all the time, and sometimes it hurts, but it needn't be devastating. Life goes on. It sounds to me like she's a bit of a toxin to you right now, and it probably wouldn't be the worst thing if you cut her lose. JMO!

I can count the number of times I've worn my engagement ring since the wedding on one hand. I also like the look of the plain gold band alone on my finger!

it's definately not tiny....it's average at least - but it just seems nowadays that one karat is becoming average and it's a little under half a karat...
