I like the idea about the restaurant gift cards.

Also - I agree about the unexpected gifts. We also received a few things that we didn't even think about and they were our favourite gifts! Especially the cherry wood mantel clock that chimes and the expensive and luxurious feather duvet. I love stuff like that and would always prefer to give a gift that is cherished. Cash to me seems cold and impersonal, and I only do gift cards when I don't know the couple really well.

Also a good suggestion about the AMEX gift cards. Thanks girls!

RE: Gifts?!

Didn't read the other replies, so maybe someone has already suggested this. A friend of mine received a few gift certificates to different restaurants in town and she absolutely LOVED them. It's something that the couple can enjoy together to relax and have a nice meal out. If you don't know them that well, this relieves the pressure of buying them something they'll want to put in their home.
Just a thought!

RE: Gifts?!
tricky (4/6/2006)
a gift card is nice if you're ok with doing that. i know we got some for our wedding and we had a really good time shopping together to find things we needed.
if not, why not purchase something from a larger chain store and include a gift receipt? you can always add a little note with it to say that you had wanted to purchase them something but that if it wasn't exactly the right colour, size or something to their taste that they'd be welcome to exchange it.

i know we got a few wedding gifts that we never in a million years would have thought to register for and they turned out to be some of the things we treasure the most.
Good suggestion!!!

RE: Gifts?!

a gift card is nice if you're ok with doing that. i know we got some for our wedding and we had a really good time shopping together to find things we needed.

if not, why not purchase something from a larger chain store and include a gift receipt? you can always add a little note with it to say that you had wanted to purchase them something but that if it wasn't exactly the right colour, size or something to their taste that they'd be welcome to exchange it.

i know we got a few wedding gifts that we never in a million years would have thought to register for and they turned out to be some of the things we treasure the most.

RE: Gifts?!

Sorry Val, I'm a little slow!!! What about an American Express Gift Card, you can purchase them in any denomination and the couple could use that wherever Amex is accepted!

RE: Gifts?!
fascha (4/6/2006)
If everyone gave a giftcard to different places that would probably just get confusing for the couple! Another co-worker has hinted that she will be inviting hubby and I to her Sept wedding.

What do I give these couples as gifts? Do I ask if they are registered? If not - how do I know what they like? Please note - I do not give cash as a gift. It's just not something I personally like to do. Is a gift card appropriate?
