I had nothing to do with the planning of either... they were a total blast! and i am so glad that it was a tradition that i got to take part in, esp since there were so many that we skipped due to having a DW. We are not having a AHR... so this a was a chance for me to celebrate with people that were unable to come to my wedding.:)

I think if someone is going to throw you a shower.... let them and enjoy it!!!

RE: Bridal Shower?

My friends just threw me a shower a week ago and it was a total surprise....I told them I didn't really want a shower, and I know how they feel about showers..therefore I was sure I wasn't having one. So I was really surprised when they had all my other friends and close family that I haven't seen in a while. It was really nice to get all the ladies from both families together. I was very overwhelmed since I've never been in the same room with all the important people in my life. All in all it was fun and I'm glad it happened to spend time with my friends and family and I didn't really feel like it was about the gifts. It wasn't as ackward as I thought it would be!

RE: Bridal Shower?

Our wedding party threw us a Jack & Jill AND a bridal shower. I had asked them not to throw me a shower but they kept it small and to a few aunts that couldn't make it to Cuba that apparently wanted to buy us something. It turned out to be pretty painless... Sitting there and opening gifts infront of a bunch of people can be awkward.. but it was OK. We got a bunch of cool stuff so it was worth it. :)

It's hard to not feel greedy... but I guess we ARE getting married!! It's a pretty BIG deal!

RE: Bridal Shower?

My bridesmaids had a stagette for me and some people brought me gifts, so I think it was my shower too. My bridesmaids invited lots of girls, most of whom were not invited to the wedding or AHR, but it was more of a fun day/night out then a formal shower.

RE: Bridal Shower?

my mil and mother had one for me. it was really nice i have to say. it felt a little strange getting so many gifts, many from people i ddn't know, but it was a great afternoon!!

it was very simple, food, wine, coffee, tea, socializing. no games.

RE: Bridal Shower?

thanks for all your replies, definitely things to consider.
I don't get the feeling that they're asking just know if they need to plan. Wishful thinking thanks, but I don't think people ask to "plan" for a shower 13 months in advance. Anyhoo, having said all that, the people I get bad vibes from are also people that are known to be extremely cheap (the cheap side of my family as I call them). Let's put it this way...the male cheap side of my family just went to another family member's stag recently and they didn't buy one raffle ticket because they thought it was a money grab. Ummm helloooooo.....it is!!

That got me to thinking though and the reason I'm asking...do brides with DW's have bridal showers? and if so, is it done differently in some way?
Your answers have been helping :)

RE: Bridal Shower?

I didn't have a shower, in part due to logistics, but largely due to the fact that my parents are very concerned about things being seen as "gift grabs" especially since we didn't invite anyone besides immediate family to the destination wedding (although I am having an at home reception with full dinner).

I would have loved to have one, without gifts, just to be the center of attention for a few hours, chat about the wedding, and play silly little games.

RE: Bridal Shower?

have as many parties as you can!! its FUN!! hehe

Im having a shower at my moms, and we are inviting every woman who we invited to the wedding. Most of these women cant make it to Cuba, so its a chance to celebrate with them in an intimate setting b4 we go to Cuba.

Since Im having my bachlorette party in Cuba, this will be the big girly party.

then a big party with everyone when we come back.

party hardy!

RE: Bridal Shower?

I had two showers, one thrown by my aunt in Ontario (which I couldn't attend myself but my aunts/cousins/mom/MIL/FSIL went) and one for friends here. I'm sure if people are asking it's because they want to know if you're having one, not trying to convince you not to! However, the only people that were invited with either invited to the wedding, the AHR or the BBQ that we threw at home afterwards.

RE: Bridal Shower?

People are asking because they want to know if they need to plan on going to a shower. I don't think it's selfish at all, you are still getting married and it's a momentous occasion in your life! Your friends should want to celebrate with you regardless! :) Now, my shower was combined with my stagette party, so maybe something like this will work better, where it's not JUST an event to receive gifts, but an event to hang out with your friends and have a great time. Everyone enjoys that!

Bridal Shower?

People are starting to ask me if I'm having a bridal shower and I say yes but now i'm starting to womder if I should be having one since all of the invited guests won't be coming and we're not sure if we're having an AHR.
