I need help.  I am planning our stag and doe and have just been informed that you can no longer make money from the sale of alcohol. My fiance has been collecting LCBO gift certificates from contests at work and it was our plan to make money off these at our stag and doe. I have been told I need to get a Special Occasion Permit but noone can profit from the sale of alcohol directly or indirectly. Does anyone have any experience with this? I know we can make money in other ways but...has anyone found a way around this? Any help is appreciated.

You need to check out the LCBO website and use their toll free number. I am reading the SOP permit info now and think that you can make a profit but the license you purchase is different (and costs more money). If I am reading correctly it will cost you $75.00 instead of $25.00.

Think about what you just wrote.  No one can profit from the sale of alcohol ... ummm how do you think the LCBO and the Beer Store make money ... ???  How about bars ???  Your venue ???  Your caterer ???  They all sell booze and make some form of "profit" off the sale of it ... whom ever told you that needs to give their head a shake ...

Yes you need a permit to sell alcohol and you also need Smart Servers to be serving it ...

Using an SOP permit you cannot make money directly or indirectly from the sale of alcohol. The permit your venue, your caterer, etc has is different from this.

Typically here is what happens ~ the government knows that people run Jack n Jills, Stag n Does, Weddings, etc and it does not condone the profit to a person from the sale of alcohol. That said, it has been many many years since any liquor inspector showed up at a Stag n Doe to check that you're not making profit. If they did, yes you can be in trouble.

We each take our own risks. Personally since you are small potatoes in the large world of liquor sales ~ I really would not worry about it.

Need anymore advice ~ PM me.

Your best bet is to look into it yourself.. http://www.agco.on.ca/en/b.alcohol/b3.specialpermit.html

yes you need a licence to sell the alcohol but you don't have to have a smart served person.. UNLESS your hall requires it. The only way to legally profit from it.. you have to be a registared charity..  Read up about it.. and go from there.  I wouldn't worry about it to much tho.. they do have people that check these things out but it doesn't happen all that often and if you have the license displayed then it should be a problem.

My cousins stag and doe was last night and there are rules you have to follow:

You are only allowed the number of cases or bottles listed on the receipt attached to your license.

You can not sell the drinks at different prices.  We had the drinks listed as 3 for $10 but verbally let people know they were $3.50 each and that we had a special that included 4 drink tickets, raffle tickets and an extra door prize ticket for $20.

On the license your stag and doe is listed as a invitation reception (because you sell tickets) and in the special notes box they typed Stag and Doe

You can not advertise the jello shots, toonie toss or any alcohol that is part of a prize.  We had envelopes that were listed as a surprise for the raffle and a wine decanter to show that the one prize included a bottle of wine.

Happily, giggly married on October 28th, 2006
