I have been informed by a co-worker that I will be getting an invitation to her engagement party. Another co-worker has hinted that she will be inviting hubby and I to her Sept wedding.

What do I give these couples as gifts? Do I ask if they are registered? If not - how do I know what they like? Please note - I do not give cash as a gift. It's just not something I personally like to do. Is a gift card appropriate?

I think a gift card would be nice, better than buying them something you think they want.

I agree with chrisdann... gift card would be the way to go. Unless you can ask around about their registry.

I will often see if they're registered at places like the Bay or William Ashley by checking online and failing that, I'll go for a gift card.  (I don't do the cash thing either!)

I would ask where these ladies are registered--but a gift card is always nice as well.

If everyone gave a giftcard to different places that would probably just get confusing for the couple!  If you're willing to assign an amount to a giftcard, I would just give them cash, I'm sure it wouldn't go unused!
