Walking & jogging is great exercise, just make sure that when you're walking to do it at a very brisk pace.  I power walk/jog for my workouts and I find that by not jogging the entire hour that I'm out helps with my knee (I have a bit of a bum knee) and I have no hip or back issues as a lot of runners have.

Just as long as you keep your heartrate up and keep moving you'll get the health results you're looking for.

One piece of advice I would give is to invest in a great pair of runners, and yes that usually means spending money but it's worth it in the end.  It helps prevent injuries later on.

Hey there

My advice is to join a local running club if possible. They will teach you how to run properly. I did this and it has been so motivating! Its a 0-5km club for beginners, its a mix of running and walking and by the 6th week we will be running the whole thing.

Also, invest in a great pair of running shoes. Go to a store that specializes in running ie. running room or runners den. They will help fit you with a shoe that fits your foot. They should look at the way you walk, feel your arches, ask you to bend your knees and then be able to pick out a few pair of shoes that would work best for your feet. They will be pricey, but the comfort is worth it. My running instructor said that if you are wearing the wrong shoes you will injure yourself.

When I first started, I did an interval of walking/jogging. First, warm up for five minutes by walking. After 5 minutes, do 2 minutes of jogging, followed by 2 minutes of walking. Do that for 30-40 minutes. Once you feel comfortable with that, do 3 minutes run, 2 minutes walk. Keep increasing your running interval as you become stronger. Eventually, you'll be running for the whole 30 minutes!

Make sure you get proper shoes though as another poster have said. And also, watch your posture...don't slouch,or lean forward. Stand tall when you're jogging/running and relax your shoulders. Hope these tips help!

I just joined a "Learn to Run" clinic at my local Goodlife Fitness gym - http://www.goodlifefitness.com. We are a group of 6 ladies led by a trainer on an outdoor running program 2 x a week. We are responsible for running a third time each week on our own but may end up banding together at encouragement of the trainer who offered to do the third with us if we want depending on day/time. It is supposed to be for beginners and she has started us on this 8 week program as of Thursday, doing an outdoor 10 minute brisk walk as warmup - to a local park with paved walking/biking trails where we do stretches then do bursts of 5 minutes jogging/running and 2 minutes walking alternating for about 40 minutes or something - we do about 4-5 bursts of runs with the walks in between. Then we walk back and complete the group session with about another 10-15 min. stretching in the gym studio together focusing on stretching our legs and strengthening our core.

It is recommended that we do cross training with focus on other body parts at least one day a week. We will be running Tues/Thurs so maybe Mondays will be my upper body day or maybe Wednesday since there is a BodyPump class I like on Wednesdays anyhow.

I recommend you look into something like this. It cost me $85 for 8 weeks and you do not have to be a Goodlife Member to join the class since it is a separate cost.

Definitely hydrate well - they say about 12oz water per 20 min. of rigorous activity so plan to drink at least 1 full bottle spread between during and after your run/walk

wear comfy layered weather appropriate clothing

Bring something to wipe your sweat with if need be (I use a washcloth)

Have the right shoes with the right ankle supports and spring/comfort/shock absorption to protect your legs/knees

Wear a hat and sunblock

Stick to running in mornings or evenings when weather is cooler

Make sure you STRETCH well before and after your workouts

Alternatively I found this site yesterday and think i will join them in the fall when it gets closer to my wedding date.

Check them out: http://www.survivorbootcamp.com

Looks like a GREAT program.

I downloaded the Podrunner interval training program after learning about it from a thread on here...that's gone now of course.  In nine weeks they take you from running 0-5km.  Its pretty good.  This week I should be starting week 3 but last week we were busy with buying a house and stuff that week 2 was lame so I think I'm going to redo it.

I am definitely not a runner, and neither were most of the ladies on that thread either, but its really not bad!  When we're done and look at how far you've gone its shocking!  I can't run  outside due to extreme allergies so I do it on the treadmill and I enjoy it.
