Ok, I am a bit shy about this, but maybe some of you ladies can help.  I do not have a doctor/gyno and have never ever got myself checked.  Not that I don't want to, I really don't know how, (who to call, what to say, how to make an appointment).  I might sound really stupid right now, but noone has honestly told me how to do this and I never even realized I should until a while ago.  I am in the Winnipeg area, does anyone have any suggestions?  FH said he would even make an appointment for me, but he hasn't yet even though I asked him too a few times, and am a bit shy to keep doing it.  Thank you

First of all, don't be shy!  I don't know how much I can help you, but I'll try to start getting the informational ball rolling for you. I have gotten my anual physical done by my doctor for years.  I would suggest calling your doctor (or if you don't have one, a local clinic) to try and book an appointment for a physical.  If you are looking specifically for testing for sexually transmitted diseases, you may have to ask directly that they run blood tests.  Otherwise, most physicians (as far as I know) will check your breasts for lumps, and do an internal exam, also taking swabs to check your cervical health and pap smear, etc.

I hope this is useful.  Honestly, booking the appointment shouldn't be scary.  It is like talking in code, receptionists know what you mean by a physical!  If you need any other help, feel free to PM me (although I am in Ontario, so can't help on finding a Dr, sorry!)

Hi!

In New Zealand we call it a pap smear test... Which doesn't sound too yucky when you have to say it over the phone

I'm not sure what you call it in Canada, but I'm sure that if you said you need a "pelvic exam" and request a woman doctor, they will know what you mean

Have you read anything about what's involved with a pap smear? That might help allay some of your fears...

Although if I saw that before my first time, I might have been more nervous!! Um... It's not scary! I promise!! The utensils they use are a little cold, but not uncomfortable. Because they scrape some tissue from your cervix they say it could bleed, but I have never experienced that. It's doesn't hurt, really!!

Best of luck

No need to be shy.  They're professionals and they deal with it all the time

I don't know if there's anything similar in Winnipeg, but here in Ottawa there are sexual health clinics that usually have a walk-in service.  They have doctors there who can do exams as well as give birth control and/or advice.

Also, I would try to find a family doctor.  It's really ideal if you get a physical annually, and my pap is always part of my annual.  Is it fun?  No.  Do I feel better knowing that it's been done?  You bet!

When I have to book that kind of appointment, I just call to book a "physical." It feels like it takes a long time, but really, it's pretty quick. You may feel uncomfortable or shy the first couple of times, but then you get used to it. I just stare at the ceiling and count the dots I do get some bleeding when I go, but that's normal and it's not a lot. It's more like some minor spotting. Apparently I have a "sensitive cervix." Just remember, your doctor does this all the time and to her/him it's part of the job. They're not sitting there comparing you to others

It is SO important to get this done every year as they can detect signs of cervical cancer with the pap smear. The earlier you catch it, the earlier you can treat it.
