Just trying to get a feel for what would be considered a sufficiently generous gift where we aren't attending the wedding?

Gosh, I wouldn't expect a present from people not attending my wedding... We got a gift card for Amazon from a mutual friend who lives in France and couldn't make it, but that was a very pleasant surprise.

well, if we aren't attending the wedding then it usually goes by how close we are.  If were are close,, meaning we have talked, seen or exchanged cards or phone calls in the last several years... then i tend to give 50 bucks.  if we have done none of that... then usually we don't give a gift.

that being said, i am still shocked at a few of the people that sent us gifts... but again this was a pleasent surprise and i am sure not the norm.

If it's an acquaitance, then I usually try to find something on their registry around $50-$75.  If it's a friend/close friend then $100+.
I was raised that this is what you do if you can't make it to a wedding you've been invited to.  When I got married, we didn't so much as get a card from people we invited that couldn't come...which I found rude, I invited you to my wedding, you're my friend, and you couldn't at least find it in your heart to send a card of congrats...!
Sorry, this is obviously a peeve of mine
To each their own though.

I definitely think a card with congratulatory wishes is a good idea. A gift seems going too far though... I would feel awkward receiving it!
