i thought i would throw these out:

They are not in depth, but from a reasonable sources.

As gr8blessings eluded..it's "buyer beware" when it comes to researching off the internet.

And no way is the immunization schedule made up by pharmeceutical companies.  They may make poster charts that hang in Dr offices, but they don't contribute to the timing of vaccination.  They largely make them to hand out to docs when they deliver vaccinations.

I agree!  There are a lot of wierd-o www.vaccineswillkillyourkids.com sites out there and there is much mis-information out there!

I used the Pink Book for a lot of my research of each disease,  and also used the CDC's documents to see how many people were affected by each VPD (vaccine preventable disease - and I use that term loosely)

Another reputable source I found was Dr Sharri Tenpenny - she has devoted thousands of hours researching and interpreting government studies and documents and was helpful to me in my research.  If you're not inclined to read she has a loooong, boring DVD that is very informative if you can stay awake through it! LOL

I'm going to kinda pipe in b/c not only do I have an MD, but I have a graduate degree in Immunology (yes, I'm a geek :Whistling

The vaccines are not given too early...and they are "timed" in accordance to when the immune system is developing, which is appropriate given how the immune system develops (which is a HUGE topic that is truly hard to simplify).
But I will say that the immune system is comprised of various cells that attack "bugs" (i.e. bacteria, viruses, etc etc) in different ways.  So, different cells are involved - cells communicate with other cells and signals are not "all or none"  - a certain signalling threshold must be attained for immune cells to be "activated".  So as vaccines are introduced, they are done so as the "corresponding" immune cells are being developed and this enures their "activation" so to speak.

As for vaccines and autism....I know of the supposed link (or not) with the MMR vaccine.  There have been recent papers out on this topic but needless to say, IF the vaccine were involved (and I emphasize IF) there is much more involved than just the vaccine - there very likely is a genetic predisposition present.

I don't know if I've made any sense or not...what I do know is that the simplified explainations of the immune system provided in various layman articles are waaay over-simplified.  Heck, even how it is taught in med school, while still indepth, does not come close to what I have learnt during my undergraduate and graduate degree in the topic.  But I still find it interesting.

Bottom line though...I'm all for vaccinations...but I'm biased I guess.

Now, I'm going to deal with my son who is sitting next to me with a spoon, a and a cup of what once held yoghurt...and unfortunately, most of the yoghurt isn't in his tummy.

I agree with Slakie! I will immunize our children no matter matter; however that being said with the new vacinations such as Chicken Pox I am still somewhat hesitant because I do not think that they have been around long enough to see any possible side effects in the long term.

However with all the vaccinations that have been out for a number of years I will not be hesitating.

I just really wanted to thank people on both sides of this debate for posting really good arguments and useful information.  Definitely food for thought...this is a subject I had never even considered until now, but certainly one I will be researching when its my turn...

Note that the first 2 links that erinMD posted contain incorrect information. The second site even has an incorrect definition of "immunization". Hard to accept any other information that site might contain if they miss the point on what immunization actually is, don't you think?

The last three sites deal with autism and vaccination. May I add these articles for your consideration:

Just posting them as FYI - I don't profess to be a vaccine expert nor do these sites specifically speak for me & me for them

like I said & so have others do your research in all methods (when I did mine for my son over 10 years ago the internet was still not something I was that versed in & relied on books & speaking with other parents & healthcare providers instead) this is a hot-button issue and very controversial - sometimes I hesitate even responding to posts like this (I think I'm just uber hormonal & so uber sensitive at the moment) I just hope I didn't come across as an uniformed idiot

and now we await baby: August 2008

You don't, it's all good
And you are right, this is a hot topic....one that has come up many times.  I too hesitate to respond.  People have their own opinons and put them out. I put my two cent in...I personally don't expect people to change their minds....

....I just get concerned over whether or not people make INFORMED decisions. I know not too many people like doctors and with the internet putting out info, it makes a doc's job harder.  Most people see docs at "telling them what to do" so they go out and find info for themselves to counter what the doc says.  I deal with that often enough....and from this side, it is frustrating...and in the end, not much can be done when minds are made up (capacity and judgement issues aside, of course).
