you cannot change it online in Alberta you have to either send in your ORIGINAL marriage cert or go to a gov't office. (is what I was told when I called in)  I work in a building that has a DMV and she says in Alberta is does not make a difference as long as it matches either your birth cert or your other documents however, I suppose this could be wrong

i work st service canada, so i d this everyday.

Yes you must change it. Your pension won't match up.

You can't do it online in ANY province, it must be done in person.

It's free.

You need your birth certificate (or perm resident card or citizenship) and you marriage license or certificate. We take either.

You get a new card in about a week.

You need a card now when you start a new job. It's law that the employer copy it. Therefore, your name must match.

I hate how everyone gives advice, but doesnt know the facts. I post this every time someone asks, and everytime someone is giving the wrong information. I work there. I do this for a living. I'm a much better source then your sister-in-law, neighbour, etc.

I am an accountant and if you mean do you have to change your name info with Service Canada OK but NOT your SIN. That is yours for life regardless of your name.  If the only thing you usually use your SIN for is your tax return, just call Canada Revenue at 1-800-959-8281.

The only thing Service Canada does that involves SIN cards is EI and the actual Sin Card (beside pension). Think about it...if you apply for pension  OR ei in your married name, and your sin card is in your maiden, we will have to do security clearences. it's a hassle. Just do it.

If women on this thread gave incorrect information, I am positive they meant no harm by it. This was information they had or received, to the best of their knowledge.

Thanks for the information!!  I was going to call Service Canada today to ask this!!  Do you still need to change it if you are just assuming the new name and not legally changing it??  My birth certificate will still have my old name.

Thanks!
