1) I too hate the leash thing!!!! I have two boys aged four and two and I am due with baby number 3 in just 6 weeks. I have never had to use a leash on my children.

They know the rules...either walk beside me like good little boys, or get strapped into the stroller
(this applies to the 2 year old). I also take them to the Toronto zoo every Wed by myself

This being said, I know soooo many people that use the backpack style leashes. If you *must* use one, they are much better than the others!

6) When parents are using what are CLEARLY expired car seats with basically useless straps! What the heck is the point! Or...when parents do not have their child properly secured into their car seats, or not at all!

For teh highlighted part: my 17 month old is very very very active. She doesnt understand consequence. She sees her big sister walking, she wants to walk too. so yes, I will get a back pack 'leash'  that looks like a stuffed animal so that she can feel like a big girl, adn I dont have to worry about her running onto the street. Lets face it, sometimes its hard to catch kids when they run. Aside from her being active, she IS a 'good little girl'

I agree about the carseat thing to an extent...some are obviously out dated. but it isnt common knowledge that there is an expirary date of 6 years on them. DH was shocked when I refused a second hand seat because it was 6 years old. Also, there are a huge number of people that dont actually know the proper way to have a carseat installed, or how their children should be. Not stupidity, just havent been taught. You can usually go to the fire department or RCMP and they will show you the proper way.

I'm talking about loose straps that are not at all adjusted to the childs size. This is apparent and too obvious for anyone to miss.... Common sense!

As for the outdated seats...Maybe it's because all my kids are younger, but we were always made aware of the expiration rules! It clearly states in the manuals that the seats expire. I'm hoping that every parent would read the manual

However, again...I was talking about the ones that are REALLY obvious. For example...last week I saw a lady with a yellow plastic car seat covered in cracked brown leather. How old do you think this carseat was...10-15 years maybe? I have seen them at garage sales and stuff, but never seen anyone use them.

Having children is about educating not only them but yourself as well! This board seriously impresses me with how much time and effort the moms/parents put into researching products and information regarding their children. If more people put in the same amount of effort, there would be less children put in harms way due to their parents ignorance! Harsh...maybe...but sometimes the truth hurts!

We did it After 7 years, we finally made it official Such an amazing evening!

Ok, I know you mean 17-MONTH-old, but that just cracked me up, the idea of a 17 year old on a leash

my oldest is 5 and my youngest is 17 months...and no one ever told me about the car seat expiry. Which is stupid. You would think that at least in prenatal classes it would be covered. Just so people know. And I thought at the hospitals they were suposed to check your carseat before you leave, and that never happened either. I know what you are saying with the obviously old and inadequate carseats though...I mean, how can you NOT see that it isnt safe.

This may sound silly but it's something I think about all the time...about 5 years ago my hubby and I were at the walk in clinic which is absoulutly disgusting dirty anyways and there was a mother with her daughter allowing her to crawl all over the dirty floor and suck on toys left in the office to play with..and it really bothered me that a parent would let there baby be on such a dirty floor and suck on toys that werent even hers and god who knows how many other kids sucked or touched those toys etc...I am a pretty high matenice person so it may sound silly but I think its disgusting. Just think of all the germs and bacteria.

I also agree about the leash I am not for it..I think its cruel but everyone has different strategies with there children that we cant control.

My dh smokes and I am an ex smoker and I told him he dare not smoke in front of the baby I think its wrong even being a ex smoker.
