| I've seen a lot of women on here who seemed to have problems after coming off the pill. Long cycles, not OV at all, etc. I was on the pill for a couple of years and never liked the way I felt on it, so I went off long before we even thought of TTCing. So I guess my question is what was your experience coming off the pill, and would you go on it again knowing the down sides (or potential down sides) of being on it? Hope that makes sense my head's a mess today!

| Interesting question, Nik! My bcp experience was like this: I went on in 1999 as that is when I met dh and became sexually active...prior to going on the pill, cycles were normal and usually about 28 days...was on tri cyclen with no real problems until the fall of 2006. Starting in about November of that year, I got a bad headache in the back right side of my head and it didn't let up for about 2.5 months!!! It ranged from a dull pain to so intense I couldn't function. Naturally, I was really worried about this and saw different doctors and neurologists, went for mris, blood work, etc. No one could find anything wrong. As a last resort, my doctor suggested I stop taking hormonal bc. She said sometimes, for no known reason, the body can suddenly start reacting badly to something that hasn't caused a problem before. I thought this was probably just her grasping at straws, but I was desperate for any relief so I went off bcp at the end of January 07. And the headache went away within 3-4 days!! My first cycle off the pill was exactly like the ones on the pill, so I figured I would just go right back to normal. (I should say that we weren't ttc then, so we were using condoms). Second cycle...AF just never showed up. By the time I was a week late, I was pretty freaked out...not that I would have minded being pregnant, because I was ready, but I knew dh wasn't and didn't know how he would feel. I bought a test and it was negative. AF still didn't come. Went to the doctor who did a blood test (also neg) and checked my thyroid (which was fine). Eventually, I got like one day of spotting and was told to consider that AF. The next few cycles after that were also long (35 + days) with very light AFs. In June-July 07, I developed intense right side pain to go along with my wonky cycles and was diagnosed with ovarian cysts (not PCOS though). I had had this searing right side pain lasting weeks at a time back in 2003 too, but had never had a diagnosis. Anyway, finally by the fall of 07, things seemed to be more or less on track. I was having reliable, 30-31 day cycles most of the time. After I had my miscarriage and d&c at the beginning of April 08, it took a few months for them to regulate again, but they have, and are still about 30-31 days. So now that I've made a simple question into an epic novel, my short answer is: I don't think I'd go back on bcp or other hormonal birth control. Right now we are ttc, after we have our first, we will use charting/nfp and (if in doubt) condoms, until we are ready to try for our second. After we have our second, dh has said he would be fine with having his tubes tied. We'll worry about that when we're actually faced with that decision. But bcp obviously messed with my system toward the end and I don't want to deal with that again, so no, I wouldn't want to go back on the pill.

Thanks for sharing Kirsty... it wasn't an epic... that's exactly what I was looking for. I think a lot of women aren't aware... or at least fully aware of what the consequences can be.

| At the time, the pill did exactly what I needed it to do, with little to no side-effects. I was lucky. So If I had to go back in time, yes I would take the pill, no questions. I do wish that I had gone off the pill sooner, but that's due to my own lack of research, talking to my doctor, etc. I wouldn't go back on the pill at this stage, even after we have babies, until I was sure that I didn't want anymore. Hope that helps!

I'd been on the pill for 4 years when I became sexually active and when it was concluded that my migrane headaches were caused by my hormones and went off it after our wedding. I'd had no problems with it really, and it was easy and did what I needed it to do. My first cycle off the pill was 31 days and I never had a second one because I got pregnant right away. I have no idea what my cycles were like before the pill as I was young and didn't really pay that much attention.
That being said, after reading all the problems that other people have with the BCP, I doubt that I will go back on it again any time soon especially since we are planning on having a few kids. I will probably go back on it once we are done having kids but not until then.

I think after my first LO I will probably go back on TriCyclen Lo, just because the dose is so tiny...

| Lizzard, EEK and Soon2BMrsP I'm glad that you ladies didn't have any huge problems. Like I said I didn't have any problems conceiving, but on the other hand nobody told me about the potential problems. Think | | | |
