Update - Mum wins!  I called our baker and we're now having a 3 tiered cake that will feed all 120 people.  It's only just over $100 more expensive and if it makes her happy then I'm happy.  Couldn't believe how important this small part of the wedding was to her though.  Gotta love mum's!

Mandarine: that's nice!! congrats u and mom are both happy on the cake decision! it's great your mom is so supportive!

Soon2bMrsP: I just confirmed to have less servings (like around 50 servings) and using fake tiers to fill up the top parts~ haven't take a real look at the venue's dessert menu yet, but believe they will have some really good desserts.

We're doing only a small 2 layer square cake.  It should feed about 100 people.  We're having a plated desert as well so I wasn't too worried.

I'm going the cupcake route bt doing it differetly.  So mt FH and I are only going to have top layer, so however big that is normally.  I hate cupcake stands so i decided that the cupcakes are going to be the favours.  We are on a very tight budget, FH can't justify spending alot of money for one day so i'm cutting costs.

I agree with another PP saying they have never ate the cake, i ahve neve gone to the cake table except to take pictures!!  and the caterer is offering desserts! So I feel the small cake is perfect we cut our peices shove it into each other faces and take the rest home and freeze to eat on out first anniversary!  the guests can eat their cupcakes whenever, i may get the DIY boxes incase they want to take them home if too too full or something.

I think I may go with having a half fake and half real cake. So their will be enough for everyone. I don't want to be stuck with a bunch of cake afterwards. I would love the look of a 3 tier but would only need a 2 tier for the wedding. I heard you can get a foam piece and just put the icing over that to match the other pieces.
