Akasma - this is good to know! FI wants tungston.  I had actually asked a friend who is an ER doctor and she also said there would be no problem cutting off a tungston ring.  What a weird rumour!

A lady at one of the chain jewelery stores told me that they can be cut off, but generally you have to go to a hospital to get it done, since jewelery stores don't have the right tools.

A bigger issue for my fiancee is that they scratch up, just like all the other rings, and he doesn't like scratches. It's much easier to get a white gold band re-dipped than to have platinum re-buffed, for example, and the tungsten/titanium ones really can't be buffed.

Actually, Tungsten carbide is four times harder than titanium and nearly ten times harder than eighteen-karat gold, making it the hardest metal used for commercial jewelry. This makes tungsten wedding rings particularly desirable for anyone who is involved with physical activities that might scratch, nick, or damage softer metals. Because of tungsten’s strength, the polish is often considered permanent and will not wear off even after many years.

The only disadvantage to Tungsten is that you cannot resize it so if you FH is prone to weight fluctuations or his hands swell easily, this may not be the best choice.

Yeah, in the rare instance that you would need it cut off, it won't be a problem. I think that Tungsten Carbide rings are quite misunderstood by a lot of people, hence the rumors.

They are gaining popularity, especially among the men as they make amazing looking wedding bands. They really stand out, plus the fact that they are made from a metal used in tools appeals to the guys as well.

As I said before the only drawback to them is that they cannot be resized.

I had always heard that too, then we heard that hospitals have the tools to do it. But the jewelry stores do not want you to know that as tungston and titanium are way cheaper that other metals. We got FH a titanium band, good for him as he doesn't like alot of weight (he doesn't like rings)

Our rings   Deryk wanted a little bling since this is the only time in his life that he would want it.  I thought the ring came out very tasteful and unique.
