I am thinking about having a pomanders instead of bouquets for my girls and I, but I already bought the flowers thinking of doing bouquets.  So now I have a few questions because I don't want to waste any as they cost me $300 and I can't get more at the moment.

I have a few questions...

1. How many flowers do I need for 1 large (approx. 8" finished) and 2 smaller (about 6" finished) pomanders?  I am using hydrangeas for filler, and these daisy-like flowers that are about 3" in diameter for the main flower.  I also have these wonderful spikey, glittery, curly willows that I was going to have spiking out of the bouquet and want to incorporate into the pomander since I bought out the entire stock at Michael's and love them sooo much.

2. How do I attach the ribbon?  I am doing 3 layers of ribbon in different textures and looping them for a handle to hold.  I plan on making the largest ribbon out of a strip of velvet and then add 2 layers of increasingly thinner ribbon in my second colour.  I will be tying a big bow to the base of the ribbon where it attaches to the ball in the same velvet.  I will be wiring the velvet when I hem the edges, so I need to know if the ribbon can be attached to the styrofoam ball with the wires alone or would I need to use glue as well?

3. what kind of glue did you find worked best?  I was thinking of using a glue gun, but would the heat of the glue melt the styrofoam?  I was also thinking of using goop, but that takes a lot longer to dry.  Did you use glue at all or did you just stick the stems into the foam and go?

4. Did you paint or cover the styrofoam ball or leave it plain under the flowers?

5. I found a beautiful ornament that I want to have dangling from the bottom of mine to make it stand out even more from that of the other ladies.  It is actually a christmas ornament that is shaped like a diamond and done in wire with a sheer material over the frame and a jewel at the bottom.  It may end up being too much, but I thought if I extend the ribbon wire through the ball to form a loop at the bottom, the ornament could help secure the ribbon and the ribbon would hold the ornament on as well.  What do you think?

The first thing I did was tied the ribbon around the ball, and tied a knot in the end where the handle would come out - with glue underneath of course!

3. what kind of glue did you find worked best?  I was thinking of using a glue gun, but would the heat of the glue melt the styrofoam?  I was also thinking of using goop, but that takes a lot longer to dry.  Did you use glue at all or did you just stick the stems into the foam and go?

I used a hot glue gun....it DID melt the plastic stems on the flowers a bit, and the styrofoam a tiny bit - but it held together SUPER hard.

4. Did you paint or cover the styrofoam ball or leave it plain under the flowers?

I totally and completely covered every space of the ball - I bought some cheaper palin tiny white flowers and glued them in underneath the bigger flowers to cover up any foam.

5. Hope that helped you out!!

I didn't make pommanders per say, but I did make 16 large victorian topiary trees for my centerpieces, and the ball at the top is basically the same deal.

I used a special glue made specifically for styrofoam ( little white and blue bottle that I found at Walmart) and everything is staying put very well ( plus:  did not burn my fingers!)

Will be marying the man of my dreams!

Big day: May 18th 2008!

Update:

I gave the whole thing a shot a couple of weeks ago and mine turned out wonderfully.  I ended up only using the one ribbon and I didn't do the bow.  I used hot-glue and attached a beautiful Christmas ornament to the bottom that matches my colours and I think gives it a touch of the jeweled look I wanted.  I ended up ripping out the curly willow branches as they ended up looking silly.  I will try to post a pic tonight when I get home.  It really was easier than I would have imagined.

Sorry for the delay, I can't seem to figure out how to reduce the size of the file so I can't upload it. It is currently 3.42 MB and since my limit is 512 KB it obviously won't let me. I just got my camera for Christmas, so I know nothing about how to edit the picture size. If anyone knows how could they give me a hand?

You could upload it to somewhere like Photobucket and resize it there.
